When Jonathan begins acting strangely, Clark suspects that Jor-El is behind his father's erratic behavior and goes down to the Kawatche Caves to confront Jor-El. Lionel finds Clark in the caves, and his suspicions lead him to meet with Dr. Virgil Swann.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Calling the Old Man Out: Clark goes down to the Kawatche Caves and confronts Jor-El for involving Jonathan.
Clark: Why'd you have to bring [my father] into this, Jor-El? Whatever promises my dad made, I'll take them on. Come on! Come on, Jor-El, I'm the one you want!
  • Disabled Snarker: Dr. Swann shows a dry wit when Lionel questions him about the Kawatche Caves.
Lionel: Are you aware that, at one time, there was an octagonal keyhole on the wall of the cave? It was sealed for months. Then it reopened suddenly just after our friend Clark had been down there.
Dr. Swann: Oh well, you don't need me; you need a locksmith.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Dr. Swann keeps addressing Clark as "Kal-El", but Clark's pretty adamant about not being called that.
Dr. Swann: I don't have all the answers. I'm still on the same journey as you are, Kal-El.
Clark: Please... don't call me that! I don't even know who that is!
  • Handicapped Badass: Dr. Swann goes toe-to-toe (verbally) with Lionel.
  • Internal Reveal: Dr. Swann is shown with the octagonal key to Clark's ship after the scuffle between Jonathan and Lionel.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Lionel's is interrupted by a phone call at the start of the episode.
  • Special Guest: Christopher Reeve returns as Dr. Swann.
  • Wham Shot: Dr. Swann somehow has the octagonal key.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Clark angrily confronts Dr. Swann about agreeing to help Lionel.
    Clark: You betrayed me!
    Dr. Swann: [calmly] Hello, Kal-El.
    Clark: My name is Clark!
Dr. Swann: You think I betrayed you because I met with Lionel Luthor.
Clark: You did more than meet with him. You agreed to help him!
Dr. Swann: I didn't betray you, Kal-El. I promised you your secret would never leave this building, and it hasn't. My involvement with Lionel Luthor is in your best interest.
    • Dr. Swann then turns this trope on Clark, but probably because he doesn't know the whole story at the moment.
Dr. Swann: Was [Lionel] the one who caused the explosion on the farm? Did he make you run wild in Metropolis? [shakes his head] I opened the door to your heritage because I thought that you were ready. Your actions over the past year have proven me wrong.
