- A Day In The Lime Light: Given the episode's title, Simon is the main focus as he tries to figure out the murder of a mundane named Heidi, who was drained of her blood and believes himself to be the culprit as he doesn't remember last night's events. Clary, Jace (who has the least amount of screentime), Isabelle, Luke and Alec are reduced to secondary characters. Magnus, as well, as he's haunted by memories of finding his mother dead, having comitted suicide after finding out he's the son of a demon, and his stepfather lashing out at and calling him an "abomination", which was a product of the torture he endured from the Inquisitor, while trapped on Valentine's body, ignited by Valentine's agony rune that makes someone relive their worst memories.
- Amicable Exes: Simon and Clary ultimately become this, especially because she still harbors feelings for Jace and can't deny it.
- Blackmail: When Sebastian's cousin, Aline, comes to visit, Jonathan demands that Sebastian tell him everything about their relation so she won't suspect, threatening to kill her if he doesn't oblige.
- Didn't Think This Through: When the real Sebastian successfully escapes from Jonathan's apartment, he forgets to close the door, leading his neighbor to notify him, believing that someone broke in. Because of this, he realizes Sebastian escaped, catches up to and kills him while trying to reach Aline and Isabelle.
- Driving Question: Did Simon kill Heidi? He is targeted as the main suspect as she was drained of her blood, and even he himself comes to believe this. Simon realizes he isn't the culprit when Ollie reveals that someone bit into her feet, and the one who has this habit is a vampire named Quinn, who is the actual killer.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Raphael erases Ollie's memories of Simon being Heidi's killer.
- Red Herring: Simon is afraid when he learns that Heidi was killed and drained of her blood, believing he's the one who did it as he can't remember the events of last night due to alcohol. When Ollie arrests him and brings up the fact that Heidi's feet were bitten, Simon confirms that people's feet (even women's) disgust him, meaning that Simon didn't kill her and the one responsible is Quinn.
- The Reveal: The man Sebastian has been holding hostage inside his apartment is actually the real Sebastian, and said "Sebastian" who met Clary and his friends is an impostor.
- Sudden Downer Ending: The episode ends with Simon being exonerated of Heidi's murder and him and Clary coming to terms with the aftermath of their relationship. On the other hand, Valentine is set to be trasnferred to the Gard. However, as Isabelle and Alec arrive to Idris, Valentine is nowhere to be seen and the Consul Malachi Dieudonné angrily demands his whereabouts. "Sebastian", who is revealed to be Jonathan in disguise, sabotaged the transfer by blackmailing a shadowhunter named Duncan into portaling him to an abadoned cabin where they meet for the first time, calling him "father".
- Wham Line: The episode's final scene with Valentine and "Sebastian".
Jonathan: Hello...father.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Jonathan kills Duncan once he turns Valentine over to him.
- You Said You Would Let Them Go: Duncan was blackmailed by Jonathan into delivering Valentine to him at an abandoned cabin, promising to release his kidnapped family in exchange. However, Jonathan doesn't make good on his part of the deal and instead kills Duncan.
