Recap / Scrubs S 4 E 15 My Hypocritical Oath

Go To

While at a nightclub J.D. hits it off with the bartender who says she needs a doctor. She arrives at the hospital with her boyfriend who turns out to have gonorrhea. J.D. is bound by doctor patient confidentiality so can't tell his girlfriend.

  • Artistic License – Law: It's not the Hippocratic Oath that prevents doctors from talking to people other than the patient about their patient's health. The Hippocratic Oath is quite long, but largely boils down to the "First, do no harm." that people know about. Not sharing your patient's medical information is a much more recent legal doctrine, within the last few decades.
  • Foreshadowing: "Todd, I'm not black." "Right, and I'm not straight!"
  • Laser-Guided Karma: JD refuses to break the law (or his oath, as the show keeps putting it) by telling Kylie about her boyfriend's philandering ways, but she rapidly finds out because one of the people he's having sex with is a co-worker who also has gonorrhea and shows up at the hospital with a cup of coffee for JD.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The show once again takes advantage of the Sacred Heart logo to frame JD and Kylie with the heart through the front door of the hospital.
  • So Proud of You: Kelso congratulates Elliot for being one of the only residents to ever have the guts to stand up to him. She asks him to at least make fun of her bangs, because she's feeling guilty about having failed to save her patient's life, and he doesn't comply. Instead she'll just have to talk to the patient's family.
