Recap / Scooby Doo Mystery Inc S 2 E 20 Stand And Deliver

Go To

The women of Crystal Cove are abducted by the dashing roadside rogue The Dandy Highwayman. Meanwhile, Scooby-Doo has been having rather strange and terrifying dreams.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Anti-Villain: The Dandy Highwayman. He was a librarian who decided to have his own adventures rather than reading about them, so he modeled himself after the Dandy Highwayman he read about in books and targeted the women in his book club. As it turns out, the women went with him willingly because of how he actually listened to them while they were talking.
  • Breather Episode: This is one of few episodes not to feature a terrifying villain trying to actively hurt or kill anyone. Just a Gentleman Thief who steals from others and politely asks women to go with him.
  • The Cameo: Michael J. Anderson voices the little man in the red room — essentially the same role he played in Twin Peaks.
  • Call-Back: Clark Griswald and his daughter are still having the worst vacation ever. What's worse is we never see him and his wife reunite.
    • The man in Scooby's dreams is the man seen on the back of the book Velma was reading in the previous episode.
    • The robots in Scooby's nightmares are the ones Frau Gluck built in "The Midnight Zone."
  • Cliffhanger Copout: Turns out that Nova didn't die after flatlining.
  • Damsel in Distress: Daphne. She went along with the Dandy Highwayman just to find out where he was taking the other women and promptly contacted Fred the first chance she got.
  • Demonic Possession: Inverted. The being who speaks through Nova explains that it is a benevolent being from an otherdimensional world known as Nibiru, and is trying to warn Scooby that the thing inside the crystal sarcophagus and the treasure must be destroyed.
  • Disguised in Drag: Shaggy and Scooby, again. Daphne points out that this just isn't going to work this time, though it seems Fred did this deliberately because he doesn't want to lose Daphne to the Highwayman after finally getting back together with her.
  • Dream Within a Dream
  • Fake Brit: In-Universe, Shaggy is surprised that it was the librarian playing the Dandy Highwayman, since he isn’t British. The guy explains that he learned to do one as part of his persona.
  • Lovable Rogue: The Dandy Highwayman, he's so lovable that even people he's robbed love him.
  • No Name Given: The pool boy and the librarian, even after the latter is exposed as the Monster of the Week.
  • The Reveal: It turns out that the reason Scooby-Doo and other animals can speak while others cannot is because they are the descendants of beings from another dimension that were able to take the form of animals.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Twin Peaks: Scooby has frequent dreams throughout the episode of being in a red room were a little man (see The Cameo) provides him with some very important information.
    • A distraught husband shouts her darling wife's name, "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!"
    • The episode's title and the Dandy Highwayman himself are both nods to Adam Ant's album "Stand And Deliver."
    • One of the Annunaki is clearly modeled after Sun Wukong from Journey to the West (also known as The Monkey King).
    • Scooby's nightmares about himself and Nova being attacked by Kriegstaffebots are straight out of An American Werewolf in London.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Angie Dinkley's new pool boy spends all his time on screen in a bathing suit.
  • Wham Episode: Mystery Inc. discovers the true nature of the Crystal Cove treasure

Nova: <possessed by the Annunaki> There are evil ones. And the most evil one of all is imprisoned beneath Crystal Cove and must not be set free. You must undo it, Scooby-Doo, undo it all. Save yourself, save your friends, save the world.
<Scooby wakes up in the real world>
Scooby: The cursed treasure is evil, evil! We have to destroy it!
