Recap / Sagwa The Chinese Siamese Cat S 1 E 36 Sick Day The Name Game

Go To

Sick Day

  • Damsel in Distress: In the story he tells to Sheegwa, Dongwa portrays Sagwa as this, where she calls out as she's being kidnapped by a giant crow "Sorry I can't play with you today".
  • It Was a Dark and Stormy Night: Sheegwa surprisingly insists on Dongwa telling the story like this.
  • Makes Sense In Context: In Universe. At one point, while hanging out with the Alley Cats, Dongwa muses over his story. He wonders what it would be like to be carried off by a giant crow, just like in the story he told Sheegwa earlier. But as one might imagine, the Alley Cats can only respond with blank looks, as they weren't there when he told said-story.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: The antagonist in Sheegwa's story is a peg-legged tortoise.
  • Sick Episode: Sheegwa is sick, and her siblings have to spend time with her. This sets up the premise of the episode where each takes turn telling a story to their ill sister while she rests.

The Name Game

  • An Aesop: As the Miao Siblings learn from their parents' past, you don't have to let what bullies call you bother you. As long as you're content with who you are, it doesn't matter what they say.
  • How Dad Met Mom: A great deal of the episode consists of a flashback explaining how Baba Miao and Mama Miao met. It also reveals Baba and Mama's real names, Win Bao and Shao Fung.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Sheegwa refuses to share the embarrassing meaning behind their names, without being malicious, Fufu blurts "I think Dongwa means 'wintermelon'."
  • Like Father, Like Son: Baba Miao was friends with the Alley Cats' fathers back in his days, and they shared a similar kind of friendship. Their fathers even had a tendency of teasing Baba Miao and Mama Miao for being together, the way their children mock the Miao Siblings' names.
  • Meaningful Echo: When the Miao siblings share the embarrassing meanings behind their names (Wintermelon, Watermelon, Silly Melon Head), it's played as a humiliation that gives the Alley Cats reason to laugh at them. But after hearing Nai-Nai's story of how their parents met, their names take on a whole new heartfelt meaning.
  • Meaningful Names: Nai-Nai's story reveals that each of the Miao Siblings' names (however humiliating) have sentimental value behind them. Dongwa was named "Wintermelon" because his parents first met in the wintermelon patch. Sheegwa was named "Watermelon" because of the memory where they raced their bullies with watermelons. And Sagwa was named "Silly Melon Head" because of how they called themselves that, as a way of saying they loved each other regardless of what others thought.
  • Sheathe Your Sword: The next time the Miao Siblings are confronted with the Alley Cats teasing them about their names, instead of acting upset or angry, they response by embracing what their names mean. Seeing that their names no longer bother them, the Alley Cats are stunned silent, now that they don't have power over them. Dongwa even realizes "Hey, if we don't care, they don't care."
  • Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: The Miao Siblings initially feel this way about their names, wondering why in the world their parents would name them after melons.
