Recap / Rune Scape Underground Pass

Go To

King Lathas tells you that he has found a way into the western lands: An enormous tunnel known as the Underground Pass. At the end of the pass can be found the Well of Voyage, a portal to Tirannwn, the land of the elves. But there's a problem. Specifically, an undead Zamorakian mage named Iban, who thinks he's the son of Zamorak. The place is corrupted by whispers which drive people mad.

Naturally Lathas wants to send you in there, and the only other person he can spare is the guide Koftik. Koftik is some help, but he quickly falls prey to Iban's voice, leaving you to navigate the many puzzles and traps alone. Iban's voice comes up as chatbox messages trying to drive you into murderous insanity and following Iban, but has no gameplay effect. There's only four people left uncorrupted now- you, and three trapped dwarves. The dwarves will direct you to the witch Kardia, who resurrected Iban in the first place and knows how to kill him. Unluckily, she won't talk to you; luckily, she wrote a handy book about the resurrection ritual and how it could be re-created to kill him again, and you can steal the book and a doll of Iban while she's distracted.

The doll, once merged with Iban's ashes (his tomb is near the maze he and Kardia reside in- set it on fire with dwarf alcohol), his blood (kill the bloodsucking spider that drank it back when he was alive), his shadow (kill the three demons Kardia got to help with the ritual for it), and his conscience (represented by a dove that Kardia killed, to represent how Iban chose the path of evil), can be used to kill Iban, by throwing it into the corrupted Well of Voyage. The only problem is that Iban's still there and realizes that you want to kill him, but if you can make it despite his efforts, then he's gone forever. The whispers in the caves trouble no one any longer, and the Well of Voyage is back.

Report back to Lathas, and he'll send some of his best mages to open up the Well and reward you. Congradulations, quest complete!

This quest contains the following tropes:

  • Card-Carrying Villain: Iban and everyone around him. The puzzles specifically require you to destroy things of light (like killing a unicorn, and burning the light orbs a previous adventurer had made to safeguard his party against the Underground Pass). Kardia is especially blatant about it in her book.
  • The Corruption: What infests the Underground Pass.
  • Pet the Dog: Kardia is quite fond of her cat, and you can distract her by returning it to her.
