Recap / Rune Scape Plague City

Go To

The city of Adrougne is split into East and West Adrougne, and while East Adrougne is prosperous, West Adrougne has been struck by a plague and is currently quarantined by the mysterious Mourners, who act as doctors to people struck by the plague, taking them away and treating them where they can't infect anyone else.

A woman named Elena snuck into West Adrougne for humanitarian purposes, saying she'd be back in a few days... but she wasn't, and her desperate parents have contacted you to get her back. You enter West Adrougne through a tunnel to the sewers, with a gas mask that Elena's mother made for you to protect you from the plague. You search for her by talking to the family she was staying with, and learn that she was kidnapped and is held in a house on the south-eastern corner of the city- but unfortunately, it has been declared a plague house, and the Mourners won't let you in.

To enter, you have to get a warrant from the city's warden, who has the same authority as the Mourners do. He's drunk, but if you give him a Hideous Hangover Cure (Milk, chocolate powder, and snape grass), he'll feel better and give you the warrant. Show the Mourners guarding the door the warrant, and it doesn't matter if they heed it or not- you just nip through the door while they're distracted. Elena is held in the house's basement, and there's a key hidden in a crate that will let her out of her cell. Use it, tell her about the sewer tunnel, and then escape.

Congratulations, you've saved Elena!

And oddly enough, even if you don't wear your gas mask and hang around in plague buildings all day, you yourself will never get sick with so much as the common cold. Someone should look into that...

This quest contains the following tropes:

  • Incurable Cough of Death: The symptoms of the plague are at first fairly mild and could be mistaken for colds or other such minor illnesses.
  • The Plague: The reason West Adrougne is quarantined. It's definitely inspired by The Black Death, down to painting black 'X's on the doors of plague houses and doctors wearing beak masks and body-covering gear. The plague itself starts with mild flu-like symptoms, but is apparently 100% fatal and very contagious, so the mourners immediately isolate victims until their deaths.
  • Plague Doctor: The Mourners. The player's gas mask also follows this aesthetic.
