Recap / Runaways (2017) S03E03: "Lord of Lies"

Go To

The Runaways become suspicious of one another with a traitor among them. Catherine takes responsibility for her past. Leslie seeks help protecting the child growing inside her.

  • Artistic License – Law: Catherine's fate is a very good demonstration of why people who've worked in law enforcement and adjacent services (defense lawyers like her, for example!) are kept isolated from the general population if they're ever sent to prison.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When the Runaways are taking the test to find out if any of them are hosting the Magistrate's son, the scene cuts away right before Nico (both Xavin's and her own prime suspect) is tested. The next scene opens with Karolina and Nico hugging and crying, briefly making it seem as though Nico is the host, before it's quickly revealed that they're both just relieved it's not her.
  • Continuity Nod: The real-life Inglewood landmark of Randy's Donuts once again appears.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Catherine realizes too late that not only is a defense attorney not going to get a nice reception in prison but that her ticking off a certain gang leader with plenty of connections is going to earn her a shiv.
  • Dramatic Drop: Alex drops his phone after Geoffrey tells him about Catherine's death. This is when the Magistrate's son takes over.
  • Exact Words: Alex blames himself for Amy's supposed suicide, believing he could have done more to help her. But his mom tells him it wasn't his fault in any way.
  • Killed Off for Real: Catherine Wilder. With only seven episodes left until the series finale, it's hard to see how she's going to come back from being stabbed to death in prison.
  • Never the Obvious Suspect: In-story at least, it seems like Nico is the most obvious suspect for the Magistrate's son's human host. (Of course, the viewer knows that it's probably her own powers overloading causing her to act strangely.) Thanks to this trope, and the fact that everyone's suspicions of her have lasted a couple of episodes, it's not especially surprising to the audience when the test reveals that she's not the host.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Catherine tells Alex he's becoming like her, due to the way he manipulated the system to get his parents arrested. She wants to prevent that from happening, hoping they can be a family again.
  • Once More, with Clarity: At the end of the episode, Alex reacting to news of his Mom's death and his subsequent conversation with Leslie are shown again:
    • The first time, it looks as though Alex is crying for his Mom after he drops the phone, and goes to Leslie to inform her of her former friend's death, and perhaps seek comfort from her as the only other person around.
    • The second time, we see the Magistrate's son take over Alex's personality when he hears the news, causing him to drop the phone before giving a creepy grin. The "terrible news" he tells Leslie is not about Catherine's death, but a lie about Jonah having found them to convince her to leave the safe-house with him.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Alex tells his mom to "go to hell". After returning to the Hostel, he gets a call from his dad that she's dead. The anguish made him vulnerable enough for the Magistrate's son to fully possess him.
  • Properly Paranoid: At Amy's funeral, Catherine suspects (correctly) that Jonah killed her, and is worried PRIDE's other kids would be next.
  • The Reveal: Nico sees a photo of her mom with Morgan, the woman in her visions, and the rest of her coven.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Xavin has difficulty with the concept.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Catherine's murder was arranged by none other than sweet innocent Tamar, complete with bribing a prison guard to look the other way, revealing that she's every bit as ruthless as her late husband.
  • Slasher Smile: The Magistrate's son gives a very creepy one once he's revealed to have taken over Alex's body.
  • Wham Shot: The Magistrate's son is inside Alex.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Both Karolina and Molly deal a couple to Xavin over the course of the episode:
    • Karolina chastises them for continuing to refer to her as their "betrothed" despite her being very clear that she's with Nico and isn't interested.
    • Molly calls them out for being so blasé about killing whoever is hosting the Magistrate's son instead of trying to help free the host.
    • Both of them repeatedly point out the fact that Xavin's just a little too eager to pin the blame on and kill Nico, who just happens to be their romantic rival.
