Go To

The third episode of the eighth season of Rugrats (1991).

Spring comes to Tommy Pickles' house, and Stu leads the babies outside, telling them that now that it's Spring, they can play outside again. Tommy is amazed at how "purple" everything looks, but then Kimi incorrectly corrects him by telling him he means "blue". Chuckie doesn't have to worry about getting goosebumps anymore, but he still worries about the butterfly that lands on his arm. Phil and Lil like the flowers, which Lil sniffs and Phil eats. What Tommy likes about Spring the most is that now he can play outside with Spike again. To prove it, he tosses a stick for Spike to fetch.

Inside Tommy's house, Chas and Kira are preparing for Easter. Kira thanks Stu and Didi for helping them with the Easter brunch they have planned for tomorrow, as they've been so busy with it that they didn't have time to give Fifi her spring haircut. Chas tells Stu and Didi that they hired a consultant for their brunch, Ralph Klumdor of "Ralph on Brunch" fame. After Stu questions the choice for the name of Ralph's cable TV show, Didi asks Chas if Ralph's decorating his backyard, to which Chas tells her he's sculpting the bushes into the shapes of rabbits, chicks, and eggs. Kira apologizes for inviting everyone so late, saying that the reason is because she and Chas have been spending so much time loving each other. Angelica, who is working on a macaroni sculpture, overhears. Didi tells Kira that it's important to keep romance alive, and asks Stu if he agrees. Unfortunately for her, Stu is distracted with pipe cleaners, saying they're just what he needs for his latest invention. Chas then asks where his glue stick is, unaware that it's in his hair. To spare his feelings, Didi decides to look for one of her own. As she does this, Angelica shows Chas and Kira her macaroni sculpture as Kira cuts Chas' glue stick out of his hair. Chas thanks Angelica for the sculpture, then tells her to go outside and play with the babies.

Outside, the other babies are playing with flowers while Tommy continues to play fetch with Spike. Just then, Fifi walks up to Spike's doghouse, and Spike runs up to her. Tommy calls for Spike to come back, but Spike doesn't come back. Tommy wonders why Spike suddenly wants to spend time with Fifi. Angelica walks up to him and tells him that Spike is in love with Fifi, and as a result, Spike has forgotten about him. Tommy tells Angelica that he doesn't believe her, as he and Spike have been friends for a very long time. He tries to prove it to Angelica and the rest of his friends by leading them to him.

Back inside Tommy's house, Didi opens the closet and an avalanche of Stu's less-than-successful inventions fall out of it just as the doorbell rings. In the kitchen, Kira tells Stu about Ralph, but Stu tells her that being a brunch consultant is an imaginary job. As he says this, Didi and Ralph walk into the kitchen and Ralph greets him. Ralph tells Stu that no party is complete without him, and gives him his card. He then tells Chas and Kira that he'd like to shape their bushes into their likenesses, but Chas tells him that they had more of an Easter theme in mind. Ralph assures them that by creating their likenesses in shrubbery, he will immortalize their love life. Didi finds this heartwarming, and tries to get Stu to notice her by kissing him. When Stu doesn't pay attention to her, Didi decides to be more assertive and tells him that it's time they did some spring cleaning together, starting with getting rid of some of his less successful inventions. Unfortunately for her, Stu still doesn't pay her any attention.

In the backyard, Tommy tries to get Spike to notice him, but Spike pays more attention to Fifi. Chuckie suggests to Tommy that he say his usual catchphrases to jog Spike's memory, so Tommy tries it by saying, "Let's go on a venture", but Spike pays no attention, and even Phil and Lil are unimpressed. Tommy then tries saying, "A baby's gotta do what a baby's gotta do!", which impresses Chuckie, but not Phil. Lil then tells Tommy that Howard usually ties string around his fingers to help him remember things, so Tommy decides to try that idea.

In the second act, a sleeping Spike is now covered in string. Tommy praises his friends, then wakes Spike up. Spike shakes the string off, then goes back to sleep. Tommy thinks that the string didn't work because they didn't tie it down, but Lil points out that they never learned how to tie string. Angelica tells Tommy that Spike will never remember him now that he's in love, but Chuckie points out that his parents are in love and they still remember him. Tommy also points out that his parents are the same way, as do Phil and Lil. Angelica points out that once people get married, they start to get all lovey-dovey to make babies. Chuckie points out that Spike and Fifi are already in love with each other, so he decides that once they're married, Spike will remember Tommy again. Tommy tells his friends that he already told them Spike never forgot him. Spike then gets up, but only to drink from his water dish. While Tommy is discouraged, the other babies are excited over the idea of a wedding, as is Angelica, who decides that she should be in charge of it.

At Phil and Lil's house, Didi tells Betty that Stu hasn't been paying attention to her lately. Betty tells Didi that the lack of romance is the first sign of a break-up, and that it's important to lay down the law as soon as possible, proving it by calling Howard, who is making Easter eggs, to come over to her. Howard does so, and Betty tells him that one of the eggs needs more purple.

Back at Tommy's house, the wedding of Spike and Fifi begins, with Chuckie as a toy piano player, Phil and Lil as the singers, and Tommy as the judge. Tommy asks Spike and Fifi if they take each other as husband and wife, but Angelica points out that dogs can't talk. Tommy then pronounces Spike and Fifi married, and Lil asks Tommy if Spike remembers him now. Tommy assures her he will, but Spike and Fifi walk away. Angelica tells Tommy that the wedding isn't over yet, and they still have to have the reception.

Meanwhile, Didi decides to take Betty's advice and be more assertive, starting with getting rid of Stu's less successful inventions. This gets Stu's attention, as Stu tells Didi that he needs his Sonic Insect Repeller for tomorrow's brunch. Didi tells Stu that they're supposed to be getting rid of inventions, as he seems to spends more time with them than with her, and it's making her feel neglected. Didi points out that it's Spring, the season of love. Stu tells her that he knows that, and wants to show her something he's been working on. He leads her to a fountain with a built-in irrigation system that he made especially for her. He tells her that the fountain grows its own flowers so it can stay as beautiful as her. Unfortunately, the fountain malfunctions, spraying water and tossing flowers everywhere. Stu tells Didi that it still has a few bugs to iron out, but Didi assures him that it's the thought that counts.

In the backyard, Phil begins the wedding reception by introducting Spike and Fifi and playing music on the radio. Unfortunately for Tommy, Spike pays no attention. Lil points out that Spike might feel more like dancing if he's given his presents, so the babies decide to do that. Kimi gives Spike and Fifi a rock, hoping they don't already have one. Phil gives them belly button lint, and a dejected Lil reveals that she got them the same thing. Dil gives them drool, and Tommy gives Spike a picture of them together. He reminds Spike of all the good times they had together, but Spike pays no attention. Tommy tells Spike that he just has to remember him, because he misses him. He places the picture in front of Spike, and Spike looks at it. Tommy thinks Spike remembers him at last, but Spike turns to Fifi again. Angelica ends the reception, and Tommy asks her if Spike still doesn't remember him despite being married to Fifi. Angelica tells Tommy that maybe he should get a pet pony instead of a dog and keep it at her house. After she leaves, Chas calls Chuckie, Kimi, and Fifi over, telling them it's time to go home. As they leave, Spike goes with them, much to Tommy's despair. Tommy says that now Spike has left with Fifi without even barking goodbye to him. Lil tries to cheer Tommy up by reminding him that he'll see him at the brunch tomorrow, but Tommy tells her that it won't make a difference, since Spike won't remember him anyway. He sadly looks over the picture of him and Spike together, saying that Spike really has forgotten him.

In the third act, Tommy continues looking sadly over the picture, when Spike suddenly barks, runs up to, and licks him. Tommy thinks Spike remembered him all along, and hugs him. He then rides Spike across the backyard, buries his pacifier when Spike buries his bone, drinks from Spike's water dish with him, and plays fetch. Unfortunately, after playing fetch, Spike boards an airplane with Fifi. Both dogs are dressed in wedding attire, and the plane takes off, leaving Tommy behind. It turns out this was only a nightmare that Tommy wakes up from. Tommy decides to talk to Dil, who is trying to sleep in his crib. Dil tells Tommy to go back to sleep, but Tommy tells Dil that he can't sleep because he misses Spike. He tells Dil that best friends don't forget about each other, but guesses that Spike is happy now that he's with Fifi. Tommy decides that if Spike is happy, then he should be happy for him. He tells Dil that that's exactly what he's going to do at the brunch tomorrow. He smiles, then thanks Dil, telling him that talking to him really helped. As Tommy goes back to his bedroom, Dil blows a raspberry at him.

The next morning, the Pickles family arrives at Chuckie's house, where Chas is dressed like the Easter Bunny. Didi wishes Chas a happy Easter, and Tommy tries to smile. Chas leads them and Dil inside, then asks where Stu is. Stu hops in, also dressed like the Easter Bunny. Chas tells Stu that he can have a seat on the couch with the other Easter Bunnies, Drew and Howard. As Stu does this, Chas goes to the backyard, and finds Ralph crying under a table. He asks Ralph what's wrong, and Ralph tells him that he always comes to parties as a planner, but never a guest. Meanwhile, Kimi asks Tommy why he's acting so strange. Phil says he must be gassy, but Tommy tells his friends that he's just happy for Spike, even if Spike doesn't remember him. Spike suddenly runs up to Tommy, who thinks he remembers him at last. Unfortunately for him, Spike runs right past him to pee on a tree. Phil tries to get Tommy's mind off Spike by talking about the Dummi Bears, but Tommy assures his friends that he's still happy, and tries to smile again.

All the adults gather around the table as Chas begins the party by saying that he and Kira would like to thank everyone for spending their first Easter together. He then introduces a nervous Ralph to everyone. He then introduces Howard as the party's official Easter Bunny, as he, Stu, and Drew decided to just dress up for the occasion. Howard introduces himself to the babies, when a bee suddenly flies up to him. Stu decides to get rid of the bee with his Sonic Insect Repeller, but ends up knocking Howard into a table. Chas tells the babies that this would be a good time to start the egg hunt, and the babies leave. At first, the Sonic Insect Repeller seems to have driven the bee away, but it is then revealed that it instead attracted an entire swarm of bees, which reminds Stu why he put it in the closet in the first place. The bees buzz around Stu and Howard, who run away.

Meanwhile, the babies find some Easter eggs, and Tommy continues to act happy. Phil then decides to eat mud, and Lil and Kimi decide to join him. Chuckie asks Tommy if he's really all right, as he seems to be acting too happy, like clown happy, which is scaring him. Tommy admits that he isn't happy because he still misses Spike, and he's really sad deep down. Tommy cries, and Chuckie tries to calm him down by telling him to use his sleeve as a hankerchief. Tommy does so just as Spike walks up to him. Chuckie tells Tommy that Spike remembers him after all, but Tommy isn't so sure. Kimi tells Tommy that Spike went right to him, and Phil and Lil assure him that Spike remembers him just as he did before. Tommy is happy again, and tells Spike that he never forgot him. Just then, Spike runs away, but stops to tell the babies to follow him.

Meanwhile, Ralph looks over the wrecked, bee-covered table, saying that this brunch was the best one he ever went to, and now it's over. He cries hysterically, and Betty tries to calm him down. Drew tends to Howard's wounds as Stu tries to fix his Sonic Insect Repeller and Angelica gathers up Easter eggs. Chas admits that today's brunch wasn't exactly the one he and Kira had in mind, but it was a special one nonetheless. He and Kira kiss right near bushes cut in the shape of this exact moment.

Spike leads the babies to Chas' shed, and Tommy suddenly hopes nothing's wrong with Fifi. The babies peek into the shed and find Spike and Fifi with a litter of newborn puppies. Tommy congratulates Spike and Fifi, then Chuckie tells Tommy that the reason Spike forgot him was because he was busy with Fifi and the puppies. Tommy tells Chuckie that he's right, as he didn't lose his dog friend, but instead getting a bunch of new ones. Angelica walks up to the babies, and even she is impressed with the puppies. She asks the babies what they'd do without her, and the babies all raise their hands, prompting her to walk away. All the adults walk up to the babies and find the puppies adorable. When Chas sees this, he says that this Easter really was special. He asks the other adults, "Isn't love grand?" as he hugs Kira, and Stu says, "Yes, it is." as he hugs Didi. Betty hugs Howard, Drew hugs Charlotte, and a tearful Ralph runs up to Stu, Didi, Drew, and Charlotte to hug them. Betty then leaves to shake some bugs out of her pants, which the other adults agree they should do. Ralph decides to save some bugs as souvenirs to remind him of how wonderful the brunch was.

Now that Spike and Fifi are parents, Tommy tells Spike that he's going to like being a father, as babies are fun. Dil then tosses his rattle at Chuckie, who then says, "Well, most of us!". All the babies laugh as the episode ends.
