Go To

The twelfth episode of the first season of Rugrats (2021).

Escape From Preschool

When Tommy and his friends visit Angelica's preschool, Angelica gets sent to the Booth of Poor Choices for getting into a fight with Kimi, so Tommy leads his friends on a daring mission to set Angelica free.

Mr. Chuckie

When Chuckie receives a new pair of shoes from his Aunt Linda, he has a dream where he's an adult, and Tommy gets him to take him and his friends out on the town.

"Escape From Preschool" provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Backstory Change: In the original 1991 series, the babies first met Kimi at the EuroReptarLand theme park in Paris, France. In this series, Kira and Kimi moved to Tommy's neighborhood from Paris.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the 1991 series, Kimi became part of the main cast after Tommy's brother, Dil, was born. In this series, she appears as one of Angelica's preschool classmates while Dil, on the other hand, makes his first appearance in Season 2's "Gramping".
  • Adaptational Name Change: Chas and Kira aren't married in this series (at least not yet), so instead of going by "Finster," Kimi goes by her biological surname of "Watanabe."
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Kimi goes from being brave and somewhat reckless toddler she was in the 1991 series to a Cheerful Child, helpful to the babies, and even nice to Angelica, basically swapping roles with Susie.
  • Age Lift: In the 1991 series, Kimi was a year younger than Chuckie, making her the same age as Tommy and the twins. In this series, Kimi is the same age as Angelica and is one of her classmates at preschool.
  • Cutlery Escape Aid: Discussed; when the babies arrive with the keys to set Angelica free, Angelica is relieved to see them, saying that she was worries she was going to have to dig a hole in the wall with a spoon.
  • Malaproper: The babies mispronounce Preschool as "Pee School", believing it to be a school where they learn about pee.
  • Prison Episode: Didi and Betty take the babies to Angelica's preschool, where Mr. Garth sends Angelica to the "poor choices booth" when she swats a "good choices" sticker out of Kimi's hand. Mr. Garth tells Angelica that she can come out when she's ready to behave, but since she's not willing to do so, she enlists the babies' help with breaking her out.
  • Thicker Than Water: Tommy leads his friends to find the keys to the playhouse and set Angelica free, saying that Angelica may be bossy and mean, but she's still the only cousin he has.

"Mr. Chuckie" provides examples of:

  • All Just a Dream: Much of this episode's events are a dream of Chuckie's.
  • Balloonacy: Chuckie in his dream adult body takes a bicycle with a sidecar for the babies to ride into a balloon stand. When he buys all the balloons, he ties them to his bicycle, causing it to fly away.
  • Greens Precede Sweets: Discussed; when the babies are hungry, Susie spots an ice cream truck and suggests they eat from it. Lil brings up that Betty makes her eat some green vegetables before they can eat ice cream. Chuckie decides that as the adult, he and his friends can have ice cream.
  • Growing Up Sucks: In Chuckie's dream, Chuckie finds out that being an adult isn't as fun as it seems; he has to clean up his mess after having lunch, he has to spend his money on toys for his friends to play with, he's too big to fit in the playground tubes and gets stuck in them, and tending to the babies' needs (Susie losing her socks, Lil wanting him to hold her toys, Phil's crankiness and wanting him to tell him a joke, and Tommy needing a diaper change) proves to be too much for him to handle.
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: Chuckie in his dream adult body gets stuck in a playground tube when he and his friends play space invaders. He has to be rescued by the fire department.
  • Mythology Gag: In this episode, Chuckie has a dream that he's an adult, essentially having his two-year-old head on adult body, much like in "What the Big People Do" from the 1991 series.
