Recap / Road To Berlin Ep 12 I Still Want To Protect

Go To

Patton's division takes shelter in the Zoo Flak Tower, as Miyafuji tends to the wounded. In short order, the Neuroi destroy the Ratte leaving Patton with no escape. While rescuing a soldier from the roof of the tower, Miyafuji comes under attack and with no powers grabs a machine gun and fights back.

Barkhorn suggests using the subway tunnels to infiltrate the Neuroi Dome from underneath, and leads the Strike Witches into the tight underground passages. Hattori's Striker Unit was damaged from the previous attack, and she is ordered to stay behind. After navigating the underground labyrinth, the Strike Witches come across a large Neuroi City underneath Berlin. It is based on the plans of a former Karlsland Kaiser called World City Germania. The Witches deduce that Wolf's Neuroi Core is located in the large building in the center of the city, and attack it. As they attack Germania, the Dome outside noticeably weakens.

Sakamoto and Ursula Hartmann arrive in a B-17 and try bombing the Dome, but the flying Neuroi cause the bombs to detonate too early. They pick up Hattori, and with only one bomb remaining, Hattori suggests using Miyafuji's Shinden Striker Unit to guide the bomb to the Dome and detonate. Despite having trouble controlling the Shinden, she succeeds in creating a large hole in the Dome. Sakamoto orders Hattori back, but seeing Miyafuji under enemy fire, Hattori flies in and saves her from a Neuroi barrage. Left to fight the Neuroi herself, Hattori is shot down. Miyafuji's despair causes her powers to go out of control, healing Hattori. Using the Shinden, Miyafuji single-handedly starts obliterating every Neuroi in sight, as Patton tends to Hattori. This draws out the Neuroi from underground, and they reform Germania above Berlin. The other Strike Witches follow and they engage in an all-out assault against the Neuroi City. Unable to stand up to this attack, Wolf tries fleeing with the Witches in pursuit. Miyafuji uses her newfound power to fly past Wolf, block it with a massive shield and Wilcke, Barkhorn, and Erica Hartmann destroy it.

The skies clear, and word also gets out that the Brave Witches, Ardor Witches, and Noble Witches also succeeded in their objectives. The Karlsland flag is raised above the Reichstag, and a montage shows the Allies rebuilding the ruined city of Berlin. But the Neuroi still remain in control of Southern Karlsland and Ostmark, and the war goes on.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Back for the Finale: Ursula Hartmann returns to help the Witches in their time of need.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Yoshika regains her powers once again, Wolf is permanently destroyed and Berlin is liberated, but the battle with the Neuroi is still not over.
  • Bridal Carry: Yoshika, whose magic has been reactivated, carries a recently healed Shizuka this way.
  • Call-Back: Has a few of these from The Movie.
    • Yoshika attacks the Neuroi on foot with only a firearm.
    • A Fuso Witch is struck in the gut by a Neuroi blast and barely survived, though it was Shizuka this time.
    • Yoshika's magic has suddenly reactivated at the last second just in time for her to join the other 501st Witches in pulverizing the Neuroi.
  • Character Development: Shizuka defied Mio's orders out of desire to defend Yoshika. A far cry from her usual By-the-Book Cop attitude.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: For Minna, Trude, and Erica, the liberation of Berlin is the happiest and most important day of their lives.
  • One-Man Army: Yoshika is shown to be capable of plowing through the Neuroi swarm like no one's business.
  • Sequel Hook: The 501st Witches' next assignment after taking back Berlin is to eliminate the Neuroi occupying Southern Karlsland, Ostmark, and possibly Orussia.
  • Title Drop: Said by none other than Yoshika to boot:
Yoshika: "Even so... Even so, I still want to protect them!"
  • Victory by Endurance: The final battle ends with Wolf fleeing due to sustaining serious damage but Yoshika blocked its escape, allowing Minna to deal the deathblow.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Wolf attempts to do this, but the 501st Witches are having none of it.
