Recap / Recess S 4 E 15 Gus And Misdemeanors

Go To

When three bad kids pressure Gus into stealing some Beanie McGum, Gus feels racked by a guilty conscience.

Tropes:

  • Book Dumb: Skeens seems to think that "ninety-ten" is a number.
  • Down in the Dumps: What the "creek" Skeens and Mundy were talking about turns out to be.
  • I Have This Friend: Gus tells TJ that he has a friend named "Russ" who stole from Mr. Kelso. TJ sees right through it, but he plays along and suggests that "Russ" should confess to what he did, or else he will have to deal with the guilt for the rest of his life. When he sees Gus confessing to Mr. Kelso and having an ice cream after promising never to steal again, TJ says "Good job, Russ."
  • Insistent Terminology: When Skeens convinces Gus to put a piece of Beanie McGum in his pocket without paying for it:
    Gus: But, isn't that stealing?
Skeens: We prefer to think of it as "borrowing".
Mundy: Yeah, only you don't have to give it back.
  • Karma Houdini: Skeens, Mundy, and Lazy Kid never get punished for convincing Gus to rob Kelso's.
  • Manipulative Bastards: Skeens and Mundy take advantage of Gus' naiveté to get him to steal a piece of bubble gum from Kelso's.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: For much of the second half of the episode, Gus is stricken with guilt at stealing the Beanie McGum.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The Beanie McGum must be really good if Lazy Kid was willing to run over and wrestle with Mundy and Skeens over it.
  • Persona Non Grata: Skeens, Mundy, and Lazy Kid are banned from Kelso's. It is implied that they were banned for stealing from Mr. Kelso.
  • Pet the Dog: Though they pressure Gus into stealing, Mundy, Skeens, and Lazy Kid still fulfill their end of the bargain and let Gus hang out with them afterwards, they're even willing to share the stolen gum with him.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Not only has Kelso banished Skeens, Mundy, and Lazy Kid for stealing from him, but when Gus confesses that he stole the Beanie McGum, Kelso allows him to work off his debts to finish paying for it.
  • Token Good Teammate: While not exactly "good," Lazy Kid is still not as bad as Skeens or Mundy, if only due to his laziness.
  • Very Special Episode: This episode centers on Gus having to steal candy from Kelso's store for Mundy and his gang, and is wracked with guilt.
  • Wanting Is Better Than Having: Skeens and Mundy tell Gus of a "secret creek" that they have all to themselves. Gus imagines it to be a combination of Tom Sawyer and the Garden of Eden. But when he gets there, after the bad kids convince him to steal from Kelso's, Gus finds that the creek is nothing but a literal dump.
