Recap / Princess Tutu "A Princess's Vow"

Go To

Once upon a time, there was a man who died.
The story was interrupted. Along with his heart, the prince lost his kindness towards other people, and even his memories of having fought bravely.
Meanwhile, scattered throughout the town, the shards of the prince's heart sought places to settle, and found their way into people's hearts which had a void in them.
Among those possessed by the shards, were some who ended up making their own tales go awry...

  • Berserk Button: Ahiru pushes Ebine's when the former says she and Mytho are about to leave the restaurant. She doesn't take it so well, to the point that she drops the cheerful facade, loses her smile and furiously demands they stay.
  • Foreshadowing: Ahiru suspects Ebine eats her customers when she spots a grave. However, if that were so, why would she bother putting the remains of her victims in a grave? There's more to Ebine's story than meets the eye.
  • Lethal Chef: Downplayed. Ebine's food isn't bad, per se. It's more everything she cooks is cold.
  • The Lost Lenore: Ebine's husband.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Ebine has this for a great deal of the episode.
  • Rule of Symbolism: Ebine's food is cold because that's how she's been feeling ever since her husband passed away. Later, her tearful resolve to cook a warm meal shows she's starting to heal from her loss.
  • Stepford Smiler: Ebine may smile a lot and generously serve food. But the truth is, she hides a broken heart over having lost her husband. She also hides the insecurity that without her husband, she can't cook a single meal without his guidance.
