In the days following the castoroides mission, Khatin and his trio of young assistants are hard at work in making observations on several of the animals. And in the process, they also take the time to reflect on their pasts prior to work at the park.
- A Day in the Limelight: The entire chapter serves as this for Khatin, Kaisumi, Matt, and Will.
- Bears Are Bad News: Smokey the arctodus is clearly an animal that no one, not even others of his kind, want to mess with. And judging by his reaction to the sound of Diego roaring in the distance, he really doesn't seem to like his old smilodon opponent.
- Continuity Nod:
- A large number of the speculative animals that had been rescued in previous missions without getting explicit names in their debut chapters finally get revealed to have official genus and species names.
- Rommel and Otrera are still going strong in their bond after having first shown signs of being willing to mate with each other over the course of Devils of the Deep.
- Cirrus is still eating on his own as a result of Zephyr's lingering distaste for his presence.
- Diego and Smokey's previous battle against each other back in the past is mentioned in this chapter. And the two still seem to very strongly dislike each other.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Zephyr is heavily implied to be this in regards to the sight of Nimbus seemingly making potential mating overtures towards Cirrus.
- Mighty Roar: Both Diego and Smokey give off one of these, the latter in clear rage at the sound of the former.
- The Rival: Here it is all but said out loud that Diego and Smokey really don't like each other to the point of roaring in rage at the sound of each other roaring.
- Shipper on Deck: Kaisumi proves herself this for Cirrus and Nimbus the quetzalcoatlus, even noting in her mind how she's always been a bit of a romantic.
- Ship Tease: Variants of this are shown between Cirrus and Nimbus the quetzalcoatlus and Rommel and Otrera the dimetrodon.
