Tropes

  • Calling the Old Man Out: At the beginning of the episode, after Cruger angrily orders Boom around, the B-Squad finally have enough of his attitude and promptly set him straight:
Jack: Sir... I may be out of line, but you seem to be losing it, sir.
Cruger: You're right, you are out of line.
Sky: Sir, I'm going to have to agree with Jack.
    Z: I do too.
    Syd: Me too.
    Bridge: Me three.
    • Cruger then backs down and reveals the rest of his backstory to the B-Squad.
  • Damsel in Distress: Kat. courtesy of General Benaag.
  • He's Back!: Cruger breaks his vow of peace and becomes the Shadow Ranger again.
  • Not Me This Time: Benaag is indeed responsible for his role the destruction of Sirius and four other planets throughout the galaxy, the genocide of Cruger's species, and various other atrocities, but not for the disappearance of Isinia. In reality, she is alive and being held captive by Gruumm.
  • Obvious Trap: When General Benaag sends a message that he has Kat, she warns Cruger that it's a trap. Gruumm then comes on saying that heck yeah, it's a trap, but SPD's not going to abandon her, are they?
    • Trap Is the Only Option: Because, as noted, Kat's life was on the line. Also discussed when A-Squad challenges them in the finale; the Rangers comment that it's likely a trap, but it's also noted that ignoring the challenge and doing nothing may also be a trap.
  • Spit Take: The last scene after Cruger's toast to B-Squad, Kat and Boom:
Piggy: Enjoy, it's my best gutter water! (everyone spits out their drinks)

SPD Shadow Ranger

Originally from the planet Sirius, Cruger was part of the original SPD when Emperor Gruumm attacked his planet. However, despite their best efforts, he was the lone survivor of Gruumm's attack, and lost his wife, who he believed was killed. Years later, he became the commander of the Earth Branch of SPD, and served as the mentor to both the A and B Squad Rangers. Eventually, he joined the fight as the Shadow Ranger.
