Recap / Power Rangers Dino Supercharge S2E12 Catching Some Rays

Go To

Kendall's grandmother is in town visiting, and has found a new artifact for the museum - a sun lens. Kendall says that while it is a wonderful gift, the museum doesn't need new exhibits right now; however Koda senses something familiar about the lens. Kendall, Koda and the others head to the place the lens was found, which just so happens to be Koda's home 100'000 years ago. Koda shows the group around, showing off his family's cave drawings, before they come to an offshoot with a rock line in front of it. Koda explains that his grandfather told him never to go in that part of the cave, and on Ivan's prodding he disobeys his grandfather's wishes and enters. At first nothing happens, but when the guys remove a bone covering a strange looking wall, a monster appears! She flees the cave and the rangers fight, but she is incredibly nimble, dodging their attacks and throwing them around. She flies into space and gathers energy from the sun. Koda suddenly remembers the stories he was told as a child and runs into the cave, Kendall close behind. The sunlight hits the Earth, forcing everyone in the sunlight into a euphoric state, with the monster declaring "It's vacation time!"

Heckyl is furious over this turn of events, as one of his monsters, Loafer, has the ability to do the exact same thing, so must have done it without permission. Wrench corrects him however, saying that it was Loafer's sister Leisure who had done so. Loafer also adds that the monsters themselves are immune to the energy, which gives Heckyl a perfect idea: While the rangers are relaxing, steal their Energems with minimal effort. Poisandra and Curio likewise decide to steal the Energems, while also having a fun vacation while doing so.

Koda and Kendall race frantically to reverse the effects of the sun, having got themselves through the sun using oversized raincoats and hats. They deduce that the only way to stop Leisure was with the sun lens Koda's family had, and they try to decipher the glyphs left on the walls. The rangers meanwhile are busy loving their vacation, and are soon joined by Poisandra and Curio, claiming to be under the effects of the sun as well. Despite their best efforts, Poisandra and Curio are unable to steal an Energem from anyone, and are completely exhausted by the time Fury meets up with them.

With their prototype anti-sun lens not working, Kendall asks her gran for her help, who deduces that she needs a secondary lens to widen the beam across a target. Using one from her glasses, the lens is completed and people are cured of the sun's curse. However, they are two rangers against Heckyl's minions. While Kendall heads into space in the Plesio Zord to destroy Leisure, Koda heads into the city to stop Fury. He morphs and attacks, but is severely outnumbered. While the rangers are with him, they are still under the curse's power, and get convinced to hula alongside Loafer, until they drop from exhaustion.

Kendall is able to defeat Leisure in space, and subsequently break the curse on the Earth. The rangers return to normal and battle Loafer, who wishes to avenge his sister, but is easily beaten by Tyler's Supercharge mode. Heckyl berates Poisandra and Curio for their antics, and orders them to do 'hard work' around the ship (i.e. cleaning) while the Vivix involved in cleaning the ship get to go to Hawaii, where Curio and Poisandra were headed. The Silver Ranger meanwhile is able to reestablish contact with Kendall, and has bad news...

The Dark Energem has resurfaced. Keeper explains that the Energems were forged from pure energy, and the Dark Energem collected all of the impure darkness as a result. He tells them it is a dangerous artifact that could destroy the past, present and future. Silver tells them that he wants to destroy it, and asks for the rangers' data on the Zords and Megazords, to Kendall's shock. Can they really trust Silver?

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Kendall and Koda get quality time here, with Koda getting a solo morph sequence and major story regarding his family, while Kendall is the only one to do battle in a megazord, fighting Leisure one on one.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Kendall's grandmother calls her Doodlebug while Kendall refers to her as G'ma Betty.
  • Lethal Negligence: According to Koda, his tribe almost starved to death because Leisure's power made them too lazy to hunt.
  • Mythology Gag: Leisure's cry of "It's vacation time!" is a shout-out to the rangers' legendary invocation.
  • Shirtless Scene: Chase gets one.
  • Stock Footage Failure: Loafer and Leisure both have their "Deboth" names on their backs.
