Recap / Power Rangers Cosmic Fury E 5 Rock Out

Go To

The Rangers learn that Bajillia has discovered another Cosmic Fury Zord and plans on claiming it for Ollie. Can they use the power of music to stop her?

Episode Tropes:

  • Action Girlfriend: While the rest of the team engages various monsters and foot soldiers, Izzy's primary opponent is Ollie. She spends the entire battle trying to keep him away from Fern.
  • Alien Arts Are Appreciated: Once Javi and Fern learn that even evil monsters like music, they put together a plan to sneak onto planet Akraal disguised as a thrash metal band.
  • Bound and Gagged: Offscreen, Zayto ties Scrozzle up and puts duct tape over his mouth to keep his mouth shut. When Bajillia finds him, she automatically assumes Ollie did it after Scrozzle annoyed him too much.
  • Cheap Costume: The Rangers infiltrate the mining operation in monster disguises made out of Solon's abandoned arts-and-crafts projects (color-coded, of course). Some of these are reused props from past Rangers seasons, including Javi in Steel's Frankenstein mask from the Power Rangers Beast Morphers Halloween episode or Aiyon wearing Singe's sash from Power Rangers Dino Charge.
  • Clothing Damage: Ollie attacks Fern with his Tricera Blaster and shoves her to the ground to get to Zayto. When Izzy helps her to her feet, Fern says that she's afraid she'll need stitches — for the dress. Izzy is not amused.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Javi starts drumming loudly to calm his nerves. Izzy tells him that it's distracting. The metaphorical light bulb goes off, and Javi asks his team if they want to start a metal band.
  • Genre Shift: In-universe. Up until now, Javi's mostly performed gentle indie pop. Now, he's so miserable and angry that he decides to sublimate his feelings through heavy metal.
  • Hidden Depths: Fern is a pretty decent drummer, and Izzy is an okay thrash metal singer.
  • I Told You So: Ollie is rightfully concerned when Bajillia announces the discovery of the Dragon Zord on intergalactic TV before they've finished digging it out, predicting that the Rangers will show up to steal it out from under them. Sure enough, this is exactly what happens, and he isn't afraid to call Bajillia out on it.
Ollie: Do I get to say "I told you so" now? 'Cause I've been waiting all morning.
  • Line-of-Sight Name: The Rangers end up calling their fake band "Meat Chrome" due to them being humans wearing what are supposedly robotic disguises.
  • Ray Gun: Ollie abandons his Chromafury Saber for a new Tricera Blaster designed by Scrozzle. Izzy quips that he must be jealous of the new weapons they got when Billy gave them their new powers.
  • Riddle for the Ages: It's never explained how the Cosmic Dragon Zord got separated from the rest of the fleet, or how it wound up lying dormant on Akraal.
  • Spanner in the Works: Up until now, Ollie has had no idea about Fern accidentally accompanying the Rangers into space. When he notices a mysteriously unmorphed fifth member of "Meat Chrome", he assumes it must be Zayto, granting the real Zayto the time he needs to reactivate the Dragon Zord.
  • Spotting the Thread: Ollie pays little attention to the rock concert going on outside until one minion mentions that it was something nice Bajillia Naire did for her troops. Knowing perfectly well that she's a Corrupt Corporate Executive who doesn't do "nice", he immediately becomes suspicious of the band after that.
  • Tracking Device: Seeing that Zayto has gained access to the Cosmic Dragon Zord, Ollie quickly plants a tracking device on it, allowing him to track the Rangers back to Erridus.
  • "The Villain Sucks" Song: Javi's thrash metal song is simply called "I Hate the Emperor of Evil". He later rewrites it to praise Lord Zedd when they go to perform it for the monsters and robots.
  • We Need a Distraction: The Power Rangers need a way to get Zayto close enough to awaken the Cosmic Dragon Zord. Upon learning about a "monster metal band" on the intergalactic news, Javi comes up with the idea to disguise themselves as a fake band as a distraction. Against Izzy's protests, Fern tags along too, knowing that if Ollie realizes there are only four "musicians", he'll figure out the fifth Ranger must be after the Zord.
  • Wham Shot: In the final minutes, Squillia shows off photos of her new object of affection: Heckyl.
  • The Worf Effect: According to the news report from BuzzBlast, every single Power Ranger team on Earth has been captured and imprisoned by Lord Zedd's forces. The Cosmic Fury Rangers, plus Solon and Billy, are the world's last hope.
