Recap / Power Rangers Cosmic Fury E 3 Off Grid

Go To

Stuck on a deserted planet with no powers, the Rangers try their best to regroup and get their act together.

Episode Tropes:

  • Alien Invasion: Lord Zedd has launched the largest-scale invasion of Earth in Power Rangers history. We see an emergency press conference in Coral Harbor, journalists running for their lives through a war zone in Pine Ridge, and a Squidrill and several fires burning in an aerial shot of Osaka.
  • Almost Kiss: Downplayed compared to most Power Rangers examples, especially given how often we've seen Izzy and Fern give each other cheek and forehead kisses, but they are clearly moving in to lock lips before being distracted by Aiyon's clamor in the kitchen.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Or in this case, Returned Catchphrase. As he encourages Amelia, Aiyon, Izzy, and Javi to use their new powers, Billy says, "Well, come on. It's Morphin' Time!"
  • Brought Down to Badass: While the Rangers can't morph until the end of the episode, they still have their Chromafury Sabers to fight off the Scuttleworm, and Javi sends it flying with a punch from his new arm.
  • The Cameo: Once the Rangers set up their antenna to receive communications from Earth, they watch General Shaw deliver a press conference that explains Zedd's invasion is underway and Earth's Power Ranger teams are in serious trouble.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Scuttleworm devours all of the cactus fruit Aiyon was going to use for cooking. Aiyon later lures the Worm away from the base with some stew he made from the same fruit.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • At one point, Billy talks about how he and the other Mighty Morphin' Rangers gained Ninja powers after their Dino Power Coins were damaged.
    • Amelia gets the idea to reuse the transmitter from episode 3 of Dino Fury so the team can receive messages from Earth.
    • As teased in "Rafkon Revealed" last season, Solon does indeed have plans for converting the base into a spaceship.
    • Billy refers to the Morphin' Grid as the "bio-field", the term used in the alternate dimension of Power Rangers RPM.
  • Discard and Draw: With the Dino Fury powers destroyed by Zedd's attack on Dinohenge, Billy re-empowers the team with Cosmic Fury powers in the final minutes of this episode.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: When Javi accidentally breaks his guitar strings trying to play with his new hand, all the others look at him sadly, and he snaps at them that he doesn't need their pity. He calms down when Billy helps him re-string it.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When the adolescent Scuttleworm eats Aiyon's apron (stained after Aiyon's full day of cooking), Amelia quips that even the worm monster likes Aiyon's food. Aiyon grins, teleports away, and then returns with a massive container of stew to lure it away from the base.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Mere seconds after hatching, the Scuttleworm larva devours all of the food Aiyon gathered. Then it grows to adult side and tries to eat the Rangers.
  • Fake Defector: Evil Ollie delivers an especially cruel Hope Spot to his mother, pretending that she successfully broke Zedd's hold on him so she will give him a lead on where his teammates went. Once he has what he wants, he drops the act and leaves her to fret.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Applies to all of the Rangers but especially Amelia and Aiyon, having lost Ollie and Zayto respectively. Amelia encourages Aiyon to keep moving forward, holding onto the hope that the team will find a way to save them and bring them home. Amelia's resolve in the face of tragedy is what makes the Grid decide she is the right choice for the Red Cosmic Ranger.
  • Love Is a Weakness: A key part of Lord Zedd's philosophy, and a central tenet of Ollie's new outlook on life now that he is Zedd's brainwashed general. He gives his mother the tender reunion she so desperately craves just to trick her into giving him important information. And as we'll see next episode, he clearly remembers that teamwork is an effective strategy in battle, but can no longer understand why.
  • Magic from Technology: The Morphin' Masters have always been described as magical, but Billy, being Billy, applies his years of Ranger experience and uses Solon's molecular transducer to bring the Morphin' Grid into the physical world and create Cosmic Orbs for the new morphers.
  • Megaton Punch: More like Megaton Backhand, which is what Javi's new arm manages to do to the Scuttleworm.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Aiyon mentions that his cafe is on Buzzblast's list of Top 10 Cafes with Cakes To Shove Your Face In.
  • Pet the Dog: Zedd is surprisingly gentle with the mind-controlled Ollie, especially weighed against the rampant cruelty he's shown to every other underling.
  • Rank Up: Amelia is shocked she is the Red Ranger with the new Cosmic Fury Powers, but the others reassure her that she deserves the new color and that Zayto will be proud of her.
  • Shout-Out: Erridus is a desert planet populated by dangerous worm monsters, much like Arrakis in Dune.
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: Though in this case, "Gotham" is just one of the other rooms in the base. Billy is the only Ranger who still has his powers, but is too consumed with his work in creating the Cosmic Fury Morphers to help the others with the Scuttleworm. At the end of the episode, he opts not to go on the rescue mission to Levvina in order to help Solon and Fern with the base.
  • Team Chef: Aiyon becomes this for the group, both because they need food to survive and also as a way to keep his mind off of Zayto's disappearance.
  • Translator Buddy: Solon takes on the role Trini once held in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, interpreting Billy's Techno Babble to laypeople like Fern.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Evil Ollie tricks his mother into thinking that she did bring him back to his old self last episode so she will give him critical information about the Rangers' plans. To twist the knife, he immediately drops the act once he gets what he wants from her, tells her that she's sealed his friends' fates, and then sweetly says that he loves her before returning to Zedd.
