Recap / Pokemon S 8 E 37 A Judgment Brawl

Go To

Continuing the full battle from the previous episode, Katie has seemingly backed Ash into a corner and now has four Pokémon remaining to Ash's three. Fortunately, after the intermission and the field change, Ash gains momentum and pulls ahead, eventually winning the battle. Unfortunately, he finds out that his next opponent is his buddy Morrison. Ash simply wants them both to give it their all, but Morrison is reluctant about battling a friend and this holds him back in their battle, to Ash's frustration. Will Morrison snap out of it and give Ash the good battle that they both want?

Tropes

  • Batman Gambit: Knowing that Katie's Venomoth can use Disable, Ash has Swellow hit it with a super-effective Peck and lures Venomoth into wasting Disable on it before revealing that Swellow knows Aerial Ace, a more powerful super-effective move that Venomoth can no longer neutralize.
  • Berserk Button: Morrison's Girafarig has an irritated look on its face when using Iron Tail and then looks really mad when Corphish ducks the attack.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Ash's Swellow beats Katie's Venomoth with hardly any problems.
    • Katie's Walrein beats Swellow by hiding in the water and using Ice Beam and beats Corphish with a single Body Slam.
    • Corphish easily beats Morrison's Girafarig.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion:
    • Katie's Golduck and Scizor put up decent fights against Corphish and Swellow before getting KO'd.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Morrison tells his Giarfarig to use Light Screen against Corphish's Vise Grip, which is a physical move. Justified as Morrison does not want to battle Ash.
  • Graceful Loser: Katie thanks Ash for the great battle.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Golduck uses a confusion attack on Corphish, making the latter confused. But this doesn't slow Corphish down at all, and only seems to make it more powerful, landing several strong hits on Golduck, blocking one of its attacks with a friendly handshake, and then sending it flying by throwing it while still holding its hand.
  • Me's a Crowd: Swellow and Scizor both use Double Team in their fight with each other.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: It’s a sure sign that Katie’s starting to lose her cool when she orders a Supersonic attack on a Corphish that’s already stumbling around in confusion. Ash’s friends even comment on this from the sidelines.
  • Power Copying: Katie has her Walrein use Mimic to copy Grovyle's Quick Attack.
