• Abhorrent Admirer: Right off the bat, Mawile gets scared of Corphish's advances. But she's one to talk, considering how she shows her affection for Lombre.
• Art Evolution: Some attacks are now CGI starting in this episode.
• Birds of a Feather: Team Rocket accidentally steal Lombre during their second attack, and he and Wobbuffet start bonding through a Boke and Tsukkomi Routine. And Wobbuffet is the one playing tsukkomi...
• Color Failure: Corphish when he sees his Mawile crush clinging to Lombre. Torkoal sees this and gets confused.
• Everybody Cries/Ocular Gushers: Brock does this when he knows how Corphish feels - the road to romantic rejection, followed by Corphish...and Torkoal as well. Bulbapedia says that Torkoal is joining in all the crying just because it can.
• Jaw Drop: Ludicolo's response when Mawile rejects him for a Psyduck. Lasts five seconds.
• Love Dodecahedron: Not as extreme as most examples, but here goes: Corphish is in love with Mawile who is in love with Lombre. Brock, who (as usual) is in love with Mawile's trainer, encourages Lombre to return Mawile's feelings, but he (and Torkoal, maybe) takes pity on Corphish. Only when Lombre evolves did he start reciprocating Mawile's affection, only for her to lose interest and fall for a passing Psyduck.
• Overused Running Gag: One of the few occasions where Jesse and James decide to question Meowth's sanity because of the Boss Fantasy. And for the second Boss Fantasy, Meowth himself flips out and outright admits that handing someone like Lombre to Giovanni would result in them getting kicked out of Team Rocket.
• Sneeze Cut: A dub-Deleted Scene sees the Petalburg siblings mention how Corphish now has zero chances with Mawile, and Corphish, helping Brock back at the stadium, suddenly sneezes. (The reason the scene was cut was because it was based on a Japanese story about how if you speak bad about someone they sneeze. Since American audiences wouldn't get it the scene was cut from the US version)
• Unrequited Love Switcheroo: Lombre completely spurns Mawile's advances. When he evolved into Ludicolo, he's ready to return her feelings, but Mawile now loses interest and goes for a Psyduck instead. Her trainer deduces that Mawile has a thing for "dopey" Pokémon.
