While in Hoenn to research the migration of Beautifly, things are tense between Goh and Raboot, leading Goh to consider releasing his first Pokémon.

  • Armor-Piercing Question: What Ash asks when Goh tells him his intent to leave Raboot in Hoenn immediately makes him reconsider. Realizing he's speaking from experience makes it hit like a truck for the audience.
Ash: (frowning) If you're really sure, then fine...but did you tell that to Raboot?
Goh: (pauses as he realizes that he didn't)
  • Bait-and-Switch: It looks like it's too late for Goh to say farewells to Raboot...then Raboot walks in the subway, absolutely fine.
  • Bookends: When Raboot gets a bag of apples, he refuses to give one to Goh. By the end of the episode, Raboot arrives and hands one to Goh as a sign of them rekindling their friendship.
  • Call-Back: Raboot giving apples to the other Pokemon calls back to when Scorbunny was first seen getting food for the Nickit.
  • Continuity Nod: Raboot finishes off its breakdance doing Leon's signature pose.
  • Forgiveness: Upon witnessing its Trainer's effort in helping it win a dance battle with some wild Pokémon and seeing that he truly cares about it, Raboot forgives Goh for his previous actions.
  • The Glomp: Goh does this to Raboot when Raboot forgives him.
  • It's All My Fault: Goh doesn't think that Raboot is going through a rebellious phase, he just thinks that it's his fault that he and Raboot are no longer friends. However, this also means that Goh decides it's better to just leave Raboot behind without saying goodbye or even try to fix their friendship problems. Ash's Armor-Piercing Question makes Goh have an epiphany that he doesn't want to leave Raboot.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Goh realizes after Ash's question above that he doesn't want Raboot to go and rushes to get out of the train to say goodbye.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: You know things are serious if Ash is frowning at Goh when he questions Goh's decision to abandon Raboot.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • Goh is angry at Raboot because Raboot doesn't say anything about what he's feeling as Goh is doing all he can to be a better person. Unfortunately, Goh also has problems of atually trying to do better after he assumes Raboot is better off without him.
    • Discussed. When Goh states that he plans to leave Raboot behind, Ash asked Goh if he actually said this to Goh, else it will just sound like Goh is practically abandoning his starter for no apparent reason.
  • Tastes Like Friendship: Raboot offers Goh a chance for a new start by handing him an apple.
  • Title Drop: In addition to the usual title card, Goh says the episode title (in both the Japanese version and the English dub) towards the end when we learn he intends to leave Raboot behind.
  • Tranquil Fury: When Ash asks his Armor-Piercing Question, he's dead serious and doesn't even raise his voice.
  • When He Smiles: Raboot smiles for the first time since right before it evolved at the end of the episode. It tries to deny it when Goh catches this.
