Japanese Title: The Great Fray! Battle Royal 151!!

Original Airdate: July 7, 2019

US Airdate: November 9, 2019

The Alola League kicks off with a bang as Ash and the others participate in massive Battle Royale of 151 trainers. The goal is to be among the last sixteen standing, who will then continue on further into the tournament.

  • Graceful Loser: Plumeria is fine about losing to Ilima, having proven that he isn't totally invincible.
  • Human Popsicle: A Salamence is frozen by Snowy's Powder Snow.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • There being 151 contestants is likely a nod to how many Pokemon there were in the first generation.
    • Jessie and James's disguises resemble Sina and Dexio, specifically their looks in the generation 7 games. Their aliases during the league even reference them, Jessina and Jamesio.
  • Olympus Mons: Gladion and Mallow both utilise Silvally and Shaymin respectfully in the battle royale.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Sandy and Shaymin, how on earth did these two manage to get their trainers into Top 16 (especially considering they never battled up to this point) we're never gonna find out. All we see however is a shot of a small warpath of KOed Pokemon behind them.
  • Oh, Crap!: Multiple times such as when a Poliwrath is about to be hit by Pikachu's Electroweb (complete with eyes bulging brifely) and this is swiftly followed by an Araquanid having this reaction when the Electroweb with Poliwrath on it is about to hit the Water Bubble Pokémon.
  • Shout-Out: The Pikachu Pikarla uses is named Boruto (Bolt in the dub), with the hairstyle to match.
  • Spanner in the Works: Jessie and James intend to pass through by taking cover and avoiding the thick of the battle, though Mimikyu's violent hatred of the entrants' Pikachus sends it on a warpath. Though they still qualify, Jessie has to recall Mimikyu to stop it attacking Ash's Pikachu post-battle and risking them being exposed.
  • The Worf Effect: Salamence and Metagross (the two Generation III pseudo-legendaries) are present here...but neither does well: Salamence is hit and sent flying by Turtonator's Dragon Tail and then frozen by Snowy's Powder Snow. Metagross ends up taking an Inferno Overdrive to the face and ends up being the last Pokémon to fall for the rankings to get to 16 trainers standing.
