Our heroes are having a great time sightseeing in Malie City, but after a sudden gust of wind, Shaymin, Meltan, and Sandy are nowhere to be found! Ash and friends are determined to find them, but there are others who have their eyes on stealing these unique Pokémon—Team Rocket, of course! The thieves capture the Pokémon in a supposedly impenetrable trap, but they’re dismayed when Meltan effortlessly eats right through it! Soon enough, Team Rocket is sent off with a new blast, and our heroes are reunited with their Pokémon friends!
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Antidote Effect: Shaymin reveals it knows the move Aromatherapy to cure Sandy from poisoning inflicted by Team Rocket's Mareanie.
- Cowardly Lion: Shaymin and to a lesser extent Meltan, though intimidated by Team Rocket, step up to help out when Sandy gets poisoned by Mareanie when trying to protect them.
- A Day in the Limelight: Shaymin's first proper limelight episode since it appeared in SM108. Also shared with Sandy and Meltan.
- Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: James' Mareanie poisons Sandy with Sludge Bomb. It fails against Steel-type Meltan however.
- Foreshadowing: When Sandy and Meltan catch up with Shaymin, their combined shadow looks like a Melmetal.
- Look Both Ways: Sandy plays around on a road, needing Shaymin to push it out of the way of an incoming car.
- Olympus Mons: Already having a bone to pick with Ash's Meltan, Team Rocket are left fuming when they discover Mallow somehow has her hands on a Shaymin.
- Shout-Out: To Naruto, especially as they meet someone who dresses like a ninja with a similar headband and whisker marks on his cheeks similar to Naruto's.
- Undying Loyalty: Shaymin, though technically wild, is revealed to be more or less completely domesticated by Mallow, helping her in the restaurant and going to great lengths just to retrieve her head band when the wind blows it off.
