Tropes

  • Berserk Button: Clay does not take kindly to his Palpitoad being so easily defeated by Ash's Snivy after using Attract to subdue it.
  • Cringe Comedy: Clay’s Tantrum Throwing is this since the audience is basically watching a grown man throwing temper tantrums.
  • Curbstomp Battle: The round of Snivy vs. Palpitoad ends up being one in Ash's favor. One hit from Attract, and Palpitoad is a sitting duck.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Clay uses Ground-type Pokémon.
  • Self-Made Man: This is Clay's reason for disapproving of Ash's strategy of using Attract.
  • Sore Loser: In the climax of the episode at least. Clay doesn’t take his Palpitoad losing to Ash’s Snivy well and accuses Ash of being unfair. Ash rightly argued that it was a legitimate strategy.
  • Tantrum Throwing: Clay throws a tantrum after Ash’s Snivy beats his Palpitoad.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Ash's Roggenrola evolves into Boldore and learns both Rock Blast and Rock Smash.
