Recap / Pokemon Nova And Antica Ch 10

Go To

“I do suggest gradually giving Arctick experience. It’s an excitable little thing. You may have to deal with incidents every now and then, but I think, if you work with Arctick, she’ll work with you, and the two of you will finally reach the emotional connection you have with your other Pokemon. Then she’ll eventually mature, and this’ll be a thing of the past. And she likes Cheri Berries. Give them to her every now and then.”
Brock

On the same day as the Morwenna City Pokemon Contest, Ash and the others are invited to the residence of Yoshino and Marina. There, they learn about the turbulent relationship Yoshino and her destructive, excitable little Arctick, a Bug/Ice-type Pokemon. However, this is just the gateway to deeper issues with Yoshino, as May experiences during the inevitable Contest. Can May, under the desperate plea of Marina, reignite Yoshino's passion while Brock mends her troubles with Arctick?

The chapter contains the following examples:

  • Call-Back: The "tactical fusion of fire and water" used by Tucker in the Battle Frontier arc makes its reappearance performed by May with Blaziken and Wartortle.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Leafeon, in a fit of rage, calls Artick a "thing." Gouzatile proceeds to chew her out on calling one of their kind that.
  • Expy: Arctick hearkens back to Pachirisu and its childish behavioral issues early on in the DP arc, including being a hassle for both the trainer and Pokemon. Lampshaded by Brock in his thoughts.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Yoshino was unable to reign in her Arctick because she didn't know it was a baby.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Artick was such a menace to Yoshino and her Pokemon, causing undue stress with her disciplinary issues, because she was a baby who didn't know better. It took breeder Brock and his actions to begin rectifying the problem.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: The twin sister's personalities are given focus, and this is examined by May herself. Marina is chill, peppy, and nonchalant while Yoshino is more driven, low-key, and focused.
  • Stepford Smiler: Yoshino, as a general rule, hides her emotions. If things did not go her way, she figured the outside world doesn’t deserve to see the real her.
  • Successful Sibling Syndrome: Yoshino's main conflict. Gym Leaders like her twin sister Marina are pretty much celebrities in their hometowns. No matter what, Yoshino doesn’t get the attention she deserves from the public like Marina does. Top this off with Marina getting along with Pokemon she both owns and doesn't own, compounded by her relationship with Arctick, leaves Yoshino doing Pokemon Contests for the sake of it now, not because she loves it.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Irian, the Contest MC, is pointed to look similarly similar to Marian from Sinnoh.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cheri Berries for Arctick courtesy of Brock.
