- Giant Squid: The Sparaken is a giant squid Pokémon that hunts other large Water-type Pokémon and is the cause behind the ship's power shortage.
- Mythology Gag: The Magikarp salesman from the anime tries to scam Spike into buying a Magikarp with the same bogus story he scammed James with. Though Doc arrives and scares him off before he can swindle Spike.
- Non-Malicious Monster: It's revealed that the Sparaken isn't overtly hostile and only absorbing the ship's power because a storm trapped it under several rocks and left it unable to move. It only attacks the group's Pokémon out of perceived self-defense and when it realizes that they're just there to help, the Sparaken leaves them alone.
