Short summary

Back in Hoenn, a trainer named Emerald crashes the opening ceremony of the new Battle Frontier and is challenged to defeat all the Frontier Brains in one week. He has another reason for being there, though. He's been contacted by Professor Oak and Crystal to capture Jirachi in that same time span, as it's wish granting powers are the only hope of restoring the petrified Dex Holders. But that's not the only problem. A mysterious masked knight named Guile Hideout wants Jirachi's powers for himself!

This saga contains the following tropes:

  • All Your Powers Combined: The Kyogre monster is taken down by a combination attack of the Dex Holder's starter Pokemon using the elemental Hyper Beams (Frenzy Plant, Hydro Canon, and Blast Burn) while the Pikachu family did a triple Volt Tackle.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Guile's wish from Jirachi is to summon a giant Kyogre like monster made of energy.
  • The Cameo: Among the visitors that were coming to the Battle Frontier thanks Scott's wish are Gabby, Ty, Trick Master, Brigette, Lanette, the blind boy, Swimmer Jack, DJ Mary with her Smeargle, Hirō, the Day-Care Couple, Professor Elm, Joey, Kurt, Maizie, Green's parents, Bill, Celio, Baoba, A with her Tentacool, Lorelei, and Ultima.
  • Canon Character All Along: Guile is revealed to be Archie, leader of Team Aqua.
  • Character Development: Emerald is initially not interested in bonding with Pokemon, but his experiences gradually make it warm up to it. Once he admits to Guile he truly likes Pokemon now, Jirachi grants Emerald's wish to restore the other Dex Holders.
  • Duel to the Death: Since Sird only had one suit of armor, she made Archie and Maxie fight to the death over it. Archie won.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Riley appears in the final chapter of the saga heading to the Battle Frontier.
  • Group Picture Ending: The final shot of the saga is of all the current Dex Holders with their starters and the Pikachu family.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: It's implied Emerald beat Red to get his final symbol from Tucker.
  • Phlebotinum Overload: As a result of their overexposure to the orbs, Archie and Maxie's bodies were slowly breaking apart. The armor was their only hope of surviving.
  • Sequel Hook: Two to foreshadow what would go down in the Sinnoh sagas:
    • As Archie was dying, Crystal asked where did the armor come from. He manages to get out the words "Team Gal..." before fading away.
    • At the end, Crystal and Professor Oak decide to make a call to Professor Rowan.
