Go To

"Around The World In 80 Narfs" is the tenth episode of the first season of Pinky and the Brain.

In his latest attempt to take over the world, Brain tries to circle the globe in 79 days in order to become the president of the Pompous Explorers Club, and later the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Tropes:

  • Anachronism Stew: Pinky and Brain join Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, a circus-like traveling troupe, in order to travel across the US. The show was actually founded 13 years later.
  • Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering?: Getting to India provides a rare occasion where Pinky actually was pondering what Brain was pondering.
Pinky: Well, I think so, Brain, but—no, no. It's too stupid.
Brain: We will disguise ourselves as a cow!
Pinky: Narf! That was it exactly!
  • Brick Joke: While in India, Pinky attempts to use the phrase "hoi cola" to attract attention, but fails because the phrase is American Indian. Near the end of the episode, they meet an actual Native American, and end up using the same phrase.
  • Call-Back: Sir Niles suggests that Brain use a duck and a hose to get himself out of his predicament in China.
  • Catchphrase: Sir Sydney has "By gad!"
  • My Hovercraft Is Full of Eels: After Pinky and Brain accidentally offend a bunch of Italians, Pinky tries to placate them by reading a phrase in his book.
    Brain: What does that mean?
Pinky: Either "I'm sorry", or "You have the smell of fish".
(One of the citizens aims a shotgun at them)
Brain: I think I can guess.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The fellow who initially accepts the challenge is a caricature of David Niven, while Sir Sydney is a caricature of the late actor Sydney Greenstreet.
  • Oh, Crap!: This is Brain's reaction when he realizes what the tower of crates he and Pinky are standing on are for, with Pinky holding a lit match.
Pinky: (Reading the phrase everyone has been saying in his book) Oh, oh! It means "Happy New Year".
Brain: As in Happy Chinese New Year?!
  • Shout-Out: The episode and its title are a parody of Around the World in Eighty Days. In particular, Pinky and Brain begin their journey in a hot-air balloon, just as David Niven and Cantinflas did in the 1956 film adaptation. The music for this sequence is based on that of Victor Young’s theme song for the film.
  • Standard Snippet: The background music playing over shots of the Pompous Explorers Club is "Rule, Britannia!".
  • The Unintelligible: Sir Niles.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Just when it seems that they are going to win the bet, Pinky and the Brain get delayed due to being unable to communicate with the New York cabbie.
