Recap / Peg + Cat S1E28 "The Tulip Problem"

Go To

Peg and Cat are drawing in her room. Cat draws two lines, which Peg interprets as an "equals" sign and explains the purpose of one. They start to draw more math signs, when they hear exclaiming coming from outside. It turns out to be Viv, who is jealous because Connie keeps going on about her five tulips, whereas all Viv herself has is two.

They go back to Peg's room and draw again but Viv's shouting is too distracting for them. Ramone comes over, coincidentally selling tulips. Frustrated, Peg asks, "What is it with tulips today?!", and Ramone asks for clarification. Peg explains the situation with the Neighbour Ladies, so Ramone asks how many more tulips Connie has. After some calculating, Peg tells him it's three, so he hands her three tulips.

They give Viv the three tulips, but Connie starts growling. As it turns out, she's peeved that the amount of tulips is now equal because she liked one-upping Viv, due to Viv always having more than her of everything. For instance, Viv has five irises, but Connie only has one.

To solve the problem, Peg and Cat ask Viv to get rid of four irises, but unfortunately a bird steals them, so Connie steals them too, and plants them. Peg and Cat ask Connie to get rid of the irises but she refuses because planting them was "a lot of work". She then sunbathes with a sunhat and, out of spite, Viv sunbathes with five piled up.

Connie spites Viv back by adding two extra foot baths, so Viv adds three more lawn chairs. Connie brings out a couch, as does Viv but her couch has pillows, so Connie brings her bed out, prompting Viv to bring out her bed, another bed, and an antique dresser. Connie brings out a bigger antique dresser, so Viv brings out her bathtub, then Connie brings out hers and points out that it has a grip mat. Then, the Neighbour Ladies start using Peg and Cat to show off, claiming them (Peg for Connie, Cat for Viv) to be their "helpers". They start arguing over which "helper" is superior.

Peg freaks out, then while she counts backwards, Cat retrieves his drawing he drew at the beginning of the episode. This inspires Peg, who goes over to the Neighbour Ladies and reminds them that they're best friends and friendship isn't about how much stuff you have. She then reminds them in song that they do have the same amount of a lot of things anyway. The Neighbour Ladies join in on the song, then tearfully apologise, making Cat cry too. Then, Peg and Cat help the Neighbour Ladies move their things back in.

This episode provides examples of

  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Peg says that Connie, if she had the same amount of irises as Viv, will "stop going—-", but is interrupted by Connie growling.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: In the beginning, Cat says, "A big problem" along with Peg.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The drawing Cat draws at the beginning of the episode later becomes important when it inspires Peg.
  • Episode Tagline: This episode has many instances of the word "Harumph!", said by Viv.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Viv is jealous of Connie for having three more tulips than her, and as it turns out, Connie one-upped Viv on purpose because the latter kept having more of everything than her.
  • Jerkass Ball: The Neighbour Ladies add strangely petty in this episode, one-upping each other like a pair of kids. Usually, they're very polite except for wanting Peg to behave in a more stereotypically feminine way.
  • Musical Chores: When they're moving the Neighbour Ladies' things back, Peg and Cat sing.
  • Not So Above It All: The Neighbour Ladies are usually polite and refined, but when Viv is jealous, she stamps and repeatedly shouts, "Harumph!", and when Connie is, she straight-up growls.
  • Speak in Unison: At the beginning, Peg and Cat say, "A big problem!" in unison.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: While the Neighbour Ladies are conflicting, they keep calling each other names but they admit they're still best friends.
