Recap / One Tree Hill S4E18 "The Runaway Found"

Go To

Nathan fears for his future as past mistakes come back to haunt him and Haley. Lucas hears a shocking confession after making contact with the mysterious witness to the murder of his uncle. And Brooke rekindles her friendship with Peyton after crossing paths with Chase.

Contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: It is left unclear who tipped the authorities off to the Ravens being involved in point shaving; Nathan speculates that it’s just someone who lost out because he didn’t go along with Daunte’s instructions to throw the State Championship rather than Daunte’s muscle, Bear.
  • Awful Truth: Lucas finally finds out the truth about Keith's death - Jimmy didn’t kill Keith, Dan did.
  • Cliffhanger: Lucas arrives to home find Dan and Karen kissing - and Lucas knows that Dan was the one who killed Keith.
  • Disappointed in You: Whitey heavily implies to Nathan that he knows Lucas wasn’t the one behind the point shaving, and he’s disappointed in Nathan for letting his brother be branded a cheat for the rest of his life. It’s ultimately what gets Nathan to admit to his actions, even if it could cost him the chance of reaching the NBA.
  • Freudian Excuse: The reason Ian Banks became obsessed with Peyton is because he and his girlfriend Maggie - who bears a striking resemblance to Peyton - were involved in a car accident that took her life, and everyone blamed him for the accident.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Nathan comes clean about the point shaving.
    • Abby tells Lucas the truth about the shooting - that Jimmy didn’t kill Keith, Dan did.
  • Never My Fault: Ian Banks initially refuses to accept any of the blame for his arrest, instead blaming Peyton for being a tease.
  • Obfuscating Disability: On her mother’s instruction, Abby pretends to have been rendered catatonic by witnessing the school shooting when Lucas first confronts her about what happened.
  • The Reveal: Psycho Derek’s real name is revealed to be Ian Banks, as is the reason for his obsession with Peyton (See the above entry for Freudian Excuse).
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Abby and her mother flee Tree Hill for their safety once it becomes clear that Dan knows that Abby saw him kill Keith.
  • Shout-Out: The title of the episode is taken from the song "The Runaway Found" by The Veils.
  • Spotting the Thread: Whitey is shown rewatching the Ravens’ playoff semi-final and notices the Scott brothers share a look before Lucas misses his final free throw, clueing him in that Lucas was just trying to protect Nathan, the real culprit.
  • Treachery Cover Up: Nathan tries to get Lucas to take the fall for the point shaving, citing that Lucas’ heart condition prevents him from pursuing a professional career whereas the scandal will destroy any chance Nathan has of doing so.
  • Wham Episode: Nathan’s involvement with Daunte and his point shaving are exposed; Lucas learns that Dan was the one who killed Keith.
