Recap / Nine One One Lone Star S 3 E 12 Negative Space

Go To

A familiar face from the ice storm is released from prison early, which sparks ire from Owen and Marjan. Meanwhile, Nancy faces consequences for disregarding a patient’s DNR.

Tropes:

  • Alone with the Psycho: TK is knocked unconscious from his drugged pho before he can realize this, while Carlos lasts long enough to put two and two together from the gallery’s surveillance footage and hear Sadie admit her involvement before also passing out.
  • Asshole Victim: Jon Griffin, who’s still a jerkass but an unemployed and miserly one after prison and Marjan’s loud announcement to every customer and store employee at the grocery store. Not that anyone’s all that worried for him so much as shocked that he wasn’t the one who set fire to Sadie’s gallery after he’s blown up in his truck.
  • Beneath Suspicion:
  • Bittersweet Ending: Twofold for both plot lines in the episode.
    • Justice is served for Sadie, but no one save for Owen, Catherine, and Gabriel make it through unscathed. Worse for TK, he’s absolutely distraught about having relapsed with drugs again (albeit not by his own choice).
    • Nancy barely avoids a misconduct lawsuit and termination of her job, but is clearly humbled from the effects of her willful ignorance of the DNR order.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Cruel Mercy: Thanks to Owen’s timely intervention, Griffin survives his truck bombing with extensive third-degree burns and a right-eye injury. Owen later visits to let Griffin know he’ll be punished enough by the pain of both when the latter asks why he was saved.
  • Distressed Dude: TK and Carlos after Sadie spikes their pho with her oxycodone.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: On examining the surveillance footage from the art gallery, Carlos finds that Sadie herself set up the events in the episode, including the two “toxic” messages from the last episode, and spied on Owen for a while after Griffin was arrested. After that, he loses consciousness before he can look for TK or call for help.
  • Get Out!:
    • Marjan and Owen make it clear to Griffin that they’re not happy with his visiting Sadie’s art showing.
    • After she’s resuscitated by Nancy and Tommy, Jo Ann calmly but furiously shows them her DNR bracelet, and kicks her sister and the paramedic team out of her house.
  • In the Back: Sadie grabs a butcher’s knife to stab Marjan right in the back when the latter finds TK and Carlos passed out and dragged into their bedroom. Though she passes out from the pain, Marjan gets in a right hook to knock out Sadie first.
  • Ironic Echo: Sadie remarks, “Owen… you came for me” twice after she’s been hurt. The first time, he’s relieved at getting her out of the burning art gallery in time; the second time, he angrily rebuffs her and tells her she’s under arrest, with Gabriel handcuffing and leading her out of the loft.
  • Man on Fire: In a moment of Laser-Guided Karma, Griffin is set on fire when his truck suddenly explodes, and only a minute after he spites Owen and Catherine by sneaking into their vehicle and taking their pictures. Fortunately(?), Owen is able to save his life.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished:
  • Off the Wagon: TK sees Sadie’s Slipping a Mickey into his food as this, though he tries to minimize how violated he feels.
  • Oh, Crap!:
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
  • Stuff Blowing Up:
  • The Topic of Cancer: Jo Ann has stage IV stomach cancer, and is quite emphatic about her end-of-care terms.
  • Unwanted Assistance:
