Season 2, Episode 5:

The Bone Yard

A Navy practice bombing yard is found to be used as a dumping ground for the local mob's victims. When the victim is revealed to be an undercover FBI agent, the evidence is against Fornell for being a mole to the operation and arrested.

  • Boom, Headshot!: The mob's sniper taps their mole, Agent Charles, with a shot to the head.
  • Dope Slap: Double subverted with Gibbs and Tony, who passes it on straight with McGee for eating his sandwich.
  • Driven to Suicide: Fornell hangs himself in jail. Subverted when it turns out that he faked his death.
  • Explosive Leash: Gibbs demonstrates what "Primacord" is. He uses it to cut down a tree and threatens the mobster's son by wrapping a wire around his neck in exchange for information about the mole. Subverted when he just throws the remote down.
  • Frame-Up: Gibbs tells Fornell he found cocaine and money in his freezer. Not helping his case is his connections with Ari, the Big Bad of season 1.
  • Groin Attack: Kate's revenge of McGee during combat training after this exchange.
McGee: (watching Kate do warm-up exercises) Wow, she's pretty flexible.
Tony: Just don't let her catch you looking at her, Probie.
McGee: I think she saw me. She gave me that look.
    Tony: What look?
McGee: The look she's always giving you.
Tony: Yep. She saw you. Hope you wore a cup.
  • Hollywood Hacking: Played painfully straight, with McGee and Abby front-and-center in the two idiots, one keyboard scene.
  • Karma Houdini: Two of them. Mob boss "Jimmy Naps" gets away entirely scot-free as they still can't pin anything on him, and throws his son Ricky under the bus, and all Ricky gets is manslaughter, something that he may not even be in prison for more than a year for due to Jimmy's lawyers.
  • The Mole: Agent Charles passes information to the mob.
  • Nature Tinkling: Gibbs does this, though we only see him returning from it prior to the prisoner exchange.
  • Off on a Technicality: Every time the FBI finds something on Jimmy, something happens that negates it.
  • Shout-Out: Charles and Tony quote lines from The Godfather, complete with accents.
  • The Un-Reveal: McGee is surprised to find out who the mole is, but Tony and Kate mock him and tell them they already figured it out, being "seasoned investigators". Then Fornell walks in alive and well, indicating that it was all a set-up, but it's never explained.
