Recap / My Hero Academia S5E3 "Clash! Class A vs. Class B!"

Go To

After discussing his dream with All Might, Midoriya is surprised that the essence of One For All's previous holders now live on within the Quirk. Later that day, Class 1-A and 1-B meet at Ground Gamma for their first Joint Training session. Both classes (along with Hitoshi Shinso from General Studies) are to pair up into groups of 4 vs 4 matches. Soon after the first round begins, The Class A Team is quickly ambushed by Class B, only for Shinso to turn the tide with his Brainwashing Quirk, now more advanced with his Persona Cords, allowing him to mimic any voice...

Tropes

  • The Conspiracy: While discussing his vision, Midoriya recalls the first One For All wielder mentioning they are past the "Singularity Point". It turns out to be part of a known doomsday theory that continuous mixing and evolution of different Quirks over the generations will eventually reach a certain point, where they become too strong to control and become lethal to the world.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Monoma has invoked this all series since his debut, but the Joint Training officially becomes this, allowing the overall arc to finally test both Hero Classes in a series of friendly bouts.
  • Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: The objective in each match is having two teams trying to catch each other, ending when (Heads) one full team is taken to a Capture Point. If they are unable to accomplish this, then (Tails) the winning team is decided if they capture the most of the opposing one before time runs out.
  • I'm Not Here to Make Friends: Shinso states that he's here to prove himself a worthy future hero, not make friends.
  • Wild Card: As part of his test before enrolling in the Hero Course, Shinso becomes this during the Joint Training session, requiring him to take part in a match with Class 1A and later with Class 1B. Contrary to some classmates' assumptions, Shinso's participation on each respective team is discussed by Vlad and Shota as a potential hindrance since not many are familiar with his abilities and his inexperience in combat could make him a liability.
