Recap / My Gym Partners A Monkey S 1 E 6 The A Word

Go To

Adam gets beaten silly by Bull, and makes the mistake of using the term "going ape" to describe Bull's freakout in front of Jake. Jake unfriends Adam, and Adam puts himself through madness, to try and get him back.

  • Butt-Monkey: Despite Adam's suffering, the Oscar for most abused victim in this episodes goes to Henry Armadillo, for being rejected by everyone he tries to befriend, including a football, which deflates, as soon as he starts talking to it.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: This is most likely on account of anachronism in the airing and production order of the episodes, but ... Bull Sharkowski appears, provides major significance, and Adam clearly interacts with him and knows who he is, but in the future episode, "Shark Attack", Adam apparently meets him for the first time.
  • Here We Go Again!: The whole episode was about Adam trying to make Jake forgive him and be his friend again. At the end of the episode, Jake managed to piss Adam off hard enough to make Adam dump Jake, leading to Jake following Adam, begging for his friendship back.
  • Hopeless Auditionees: Jake goes through a series of these, when holding auditions for a new best friend. The most pathetic of the bunch would have to be either Henry or Coach Gills.
Henry: ... and so, you can use me as a football or throw me out windows- Oh! And I also have no other friends. At all. So I can devote all my time to you.
Jake: Hmm, I'll put you down as a maybe.
[Jake writes Henry's name down on paper]
    Henry: Sweet!
    [Henry exits]
[Jake instantly crosses Henry's name off the list]
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Coach Gills was this in this episode.
Coach Gills: Looks like Lyon needs a new best friend! Come on, Horace! It's go time! Hey, Lyon! Wait up! Wanna go to the Malt Shop and split a sundae!?
  • It Is Pronounced "Tro-PAY": Before the plot starts Jake tells Adam that ge needs some "GRRL Power". He clarifies with a growl GRR instead of "girl".
  • Mustache Vandalism: Bull does this to the Truffles Duvall poster.
  • N-Word Privileges: This whole episode was about "Ape" or "The 'A' Word", being a trigger word for Jake. However, it turns out that this is actually a compliment in the monkey community, and the only reason Jake was offended by what he said was because Adam used it to refer to someone that wasn't him.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Adam's Truffles Duvall costume.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Jake adores a girl-power supporting pop singer named Truffles Duvall. But he refuses to admit that she's all about femininity.
  • Shout-Out: Jake draws a face on a football, befriends it, and names it. This is a reference to "Cast Away".
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Not only did Adam and Jake behave this way, but so did Ingrid and Lupe a few times.
  • With Friends Like These...: Lupe treats Ingrid this way.
