Jessica travels to help her friend Francesca Lodge, who has recently been teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Strange things happen, many of them revolving around Francesca's dead first husband, and matters only become worse when Francesca's current husband Scott crashes while drugged with her tranquilizers. Can Jessica snoop through the ghosts of her friend's past in time to solve the mystery?
This episode includes examples of the following tropes:
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Francesca's psychiatrist seems a bit spacy at times, and tries some less proven methods, but does show signs of being good at his job and making genuine progress.
- Catch Your Death of Cold: The sheriff who helped Jessica had to stand out in the rain while she coaxed Cheryl and her boyfriend into an Engineered Public Confession. At the end, he's sitting bundled up and trying not to sneeze.
- Chekhov's Gun: Cheryl tells Jessica that her mother's psychologist also treated her after she ran away to the rock-and-roll scene as a teenager. It turns out Cheryl isn't quite as over that rebellious phase as she looks.
- Exact Words: When spooky things start happening during a stormy night, Jessica tells Cheryl that someone just wants to frighten her. She didn't tell Cheryl that the "someone" was her.
- Faint in Shock: Francesca passes out after receiving a call from her dead first husband on the phone. However, Jessica reasons out that she actually passed out thanks to the tranquilizers in her cocktail.
- Gaslighting: A friend of Jessica's is being gaslighted to convince her that her first husband came back from the grave and killed her second husband. It turns out that the culprit is her daughter, who also killed the second husband, and who is convinced that if she can get her mother institutionalized, she can receive her inheritance early and live it up with her failed musician boyfriend. Jessica turns the tables on them by faking evidence that the second husband survived the "accident" they caused for him and is coming after them.
- Illness Blanket: Jessica's plan involves the local sheriff standing outside while she attempted to trick the perpetrators into confessing. This happens during a stormy day and at the end of the episode, he is sitting by the fire in a blanket and worried that he's catching a cold (although we never find out if he really does catch one).
- Ominous Music Box Tune: Francesca's first husband gave her a music box, which keeps playing seemingly without anyone winding it up. This increases Francesca's nervousness and belief she's being haunted.
- Tampering with Food and Drink: Scott crashed his car en route to the airport thanks to being drugged with some of his wife's tranquilizers. This initially casts suspicion on Francesca, but Jessica realizes that Cheryl drugged the brandy instead. She "spilled" her own cocktail and used a different bottle when refilling her cup, implying she knew something was wrong with the bottle her step-father had used for the cocktails.
