"There's a blurry girl at the end of my nose..."

The episode begins with a quick recap of "The Lord's Prayer".

Rev. Putty and Principal Fakey announce the annual Arms-Length Dance was coming up. It flashes back to when Stephanie, Orel's friend at the sex shop, went to school. Kim (Doughy's future mother) declares that she's not into boys and kisses Stephanie, asking her to the dance to kiss in front of Rev. Putty. Stephanie agrees.

Orel is working in Stephanie's shop to earn money to buy a first aid kit for the hunting trip when Doughy's parents, Kim and Carl, come in asking for nonsensical sex toys before making out. Stephanie seems visibly annoyed and saddened at Kim's presence.

In the past, Kim insists that she practice kissing Stephanie. Stephanie's eyes cross as she leans in, making Kim look one eyed and smiling. Stephanie dubs that 'Closeface'. They head to the dance.

Orel realizes there's no one he wants to take to the dance and seeks advice from Stephanie.

In the past, Kim and Stephanie wait for Rev. Putty or Carl to come by to kiss. Stephanie realizes that Kim is just doing it for shock value and doesn't actually care about Stephanie at all.

Orel prays to God for guidance. When Block interrupts his prayers, he realizes there is someone he wants to take to the dance-Christina Posabule. When he stops at the Posabules, he and Christina lean in close and Orel sees his own 'Closeface' before Christina's father slams the door in his face. Stephanie explains Closeface to Orel, and, determined that he have a better time at the dance than she did, helps him sneak Christina out.

As they go in, Rev. Putty talks to Stephanie about the dance, and realizes that Stephanie was the one he saw kissing Kim years ago. He says it would never have worked out, not because they were both women, but because Kim never cared about her. He encourages her to continue singing the song she was writing about Closeface in hopes that they both get lucky. Meanwhile, Orel and Christina are holding each other close (in contrast to the others dancing at arm's length).

Tropes present:

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: While Orel is trying to pray in his room, a screaming Block suddenly runs him and launches himself onto Orel's bed. Considering Orel's reaction ("Shapey, plea—I mean, Block!"), this is also typical Shapey behavior.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In one scene, Orel's seen praying, seemingly talking about Stephanie (a girl he likes, 'not the church going type'). At the last sentence, it's revealed that he's talking about Christina.
  • Breather Episode: While not a comedic episode nor without it’s emotional moments it isn’t a dark episode at all and has one of the few unambiguously happy endings in the season.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: While not a definitive happy ending, we finally get an episode that provides a happy ending for Orel and Stephanie, while Putty and Stephanie come to peace at what happened years ago at the dance.
  • Shock Value Relationship: Kim's relationship with Stephanie was only to get a rise out of Rev. Putty and Carl.
  • Wham Line: When Rev. Putty finds out that Kim and Stephanie had kissed, and asserts that "[she] can't compare you and her to Orel and his little Orel-ette":
Stephanie: Why, 'cause we're two girls and tolerance is only a pretend theme?
