Recap / Monkie Kid S 3 E 8 Benched

Go To

Tang is benched when the heroes compete in a talent show to win the third ring of Samadhi, and decides takes matters into his own hands.

Tropes:

  • The Bus Came Back: Jin and Yin (as well as their accountant) make cameo appearances as stagehands, having apparently decided to start a new life for themselves.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Monkey King threw the Ring of Samadhi that he was tasked to hide into the ground somewhere without much of a thought — leading the local villagers at the time to take it as a gift of prosperity, building the glowing Lantern City around it and holding a festival each year to celebrate Monkey King's "Ring of Light".
  • Commonality Connection: Despite initially mocking him moments before. Macaque notes he feels a connection to Tang, pointing out how the both of them have experienced feeling abandoned by those they consider friends.
  • Die or Fly: While hints of it have appeared before, Tang clearly demonstrates he has hidden magical abilities for the first time when Macaque is about to attack him in the climax of the episode, a protective bubble forming around him and causing both him and Macaque to float in the air.
  • Innocently Insensitive: MK doesn't really seem to grasp that throwing out every drawing he does of Tang because he doesn’t know how to make him look "cool" and outright admitting to benching him by making him band manager hurts the latter's feelings.
  • Mirthless Laughter: Monkey king lets one of these out when the group discovers he didn't hide the ring in secret.
  • Performance Anxiety: Monkey King, of all people, is revealed to get stage fright. Both he and MK recognize the weirdness of this.
  • Villain Override: After another attempt to defy her, Lady Bone Demon orders Macaque to retrieve the Samadhi Fire for her and possesses him with her power as extra incentive, slowly encasing the right side of his body in ice and threatening that it will soon consume him completely.
