Go To

Air date: August 5, 2019 note

"Grandpa's Drum": Molly embarks on a mission to find Grandpa's drum and return his lost songs to him.

"Grandpa's Drum" contains the following tropes:

  • All There in the Script: Shyahtsoo's name is only given in the credits.
  • Boarding School of Horrors: When Grandpa Nat was a child, he was sent away to boarding school, where he was forced to only speak or sing in English, and eventually gave up singing and drumming.
  • Broken Bird: As a child, Grandpa Nat was separated from his family and friends and forced to attend boarding school, where he was subjected to extreme racism and was only allowed to sing English songs. Because of this, he decided to give away his drum to his friend Shyahtsoo and to not sing anymore. Layla mentions that talking about it makes him very sad. Luckily, Molly and Tooey recover his drum and he starts singing again.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: This episode talks about Nat's past in a Boarding School of Horrors.
  • Déjà Vu: When Molly and Tooey sing and drum together, Grandpa Nat starts seeing visions of himself and Shyahtsoo when they were younger, doing the exact same thing.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Shyahtsoo hasn't changed her hair in over 60 years.
  • Manly Tears: Grandpa Nat sheds these when his songs return to him and he takes up the drum again.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Shyahtsoo's granddaughter looks exactly like she did at that age.
  • Very Special Episode: This episode talks about the racism that Alaskan Natives experienced as part of a boarding school assimilation campaign.

"Have Canoe, Will Paddle": Connie tries to teach Molly, Tooey and Trini how to paddle a canoe.

"Have Canoe, Will Paddle" contains the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: When the kids ask Connie a second time if she wants to start teaching them to race in the canoe, she initially says no, and that she wants them to go home...and get some rest so they can start training early the next morning.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Mr. Patak's canoe comes in handy in the climax when the kids put a hole in their canoe.
  • Description Cut: When the kids ask Mr. Patak if he would be their canoe coach.
Molly: He is a perfect fit!
Mr. Patak: I am not a perfect fit!
  • Hidden Depths: The kids find out that Connie has won awards for canoeing and has even been in the Olympics.
  • Sports Hero Backstory: Connie is revealed to have raced in the Olympics and won a gold medal in the Women's C-1 200 meter race
  • Training from Hell: Connie forces Molly, Tooey, and Trini to undergo rigorous training with odd tasks such as balancing water balloons and trying to lift watermelons covered with butter. However, this all proves to be useful to them.
  • Wax On, Wax Off: Connie's training exercises include balancing water balloons on the feet and hands, and trying to grab buttered watermelons out of the water. Molly eventually learns their purpose.
