Recap / Mob Psycho 100, s1e7: 'Exaltation'

Go To

Mob's reputation as ‘White-T Poison’ spreads among the city's middle school gangs, though his identity remains unknown. The banchō are all spoiling for a bout with him.

Meanwhile, Dimple introduces himself to Ritsu. The fact that the boy can see him is proof that he has psychic abilities too. After Dimple appeals to his ego, Ritsu allows him to possess his body, though he is able to remain in control. The ghost, disappointed at not finding another hapless host, uses the opportunity to help the teen fine-tune his burgeoning skills instead. It seems he’s always had latent psychic powers and his crushing guilt has brought them out.

Kamuro and Ritsu continue to frame delinquents and rule-breakers. Ritsu angsts over this, but it does have the advantage of amplifying his powers. It also brings out a psychopathic streak…

At the Awakening Lab, he bends cutlery effortlessly for Mitsūra, then offers to fold his car in half. A group of students framed by Kamuro and Ritsu attack him, but he dispatches them quickly. At this sight, Teru gives him a wise warning. Power-drunken Ritsu offers his hand as a strength check, but Teru easily forces him to his knees. In shock, he just barely manages to escape. He vows to get stronger.

Mob is approached by a woman in a sharp suit who tries to sell him a vase, then jostles him so he cracks it. The woman and her partner try to extort several million yen from him until he calls Reigen, who calls them both out on their sleazy tactics. The pair leave, but not without scaring the crap out of the shady art dealers.

Ritsu and Kamuro shake down the Body Improvement Club for harboring Onigawara, but Kenzaki, a banchō in search of White-T Poison, interrupts. Ritsu takes him out. Kamuro, on the other hand, takes the fall later: Kenzaki’s allies pulverize him. The next day, a bandaged, swollen Kamuro blames Ritsu for the attack on him. Ritsu coldly lets him absorb the other gang leaders' retaliation alone. Later, after he pays Kamuro an intimidating visit, Dimple offers to help him become a superstar… and now Ritsu understands what he’s really after.

Banchō from all over the city, convinced that Ritsu is their man, converge against him in an alley. A man we've seen before secretly observes from on high. Hanazawa, alarmed, is watching as well. Ritsu—still under Dimple's possession—beats up all the gang leaders and gloats.

Suddenly, a familiar voice calls out from behind him.

Tropes appearing in this episode include:

  • Asshole Victim: Kamuro, all the banchō Ritsu takes out...
  • Dodgy Toupee: The first appearance of the 'Haystack', the ridiculous wig covering Teru's Mob-induced bald spot. He is no less of a badass for it.
  • Dramatic High Perching: Ritsu stands on an electrical pole and gloats to Dimple... after breaking into Kamuro's room just to humiliate him for his part in the crackdown on delinquents.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: The younger Kageyama brother reckons that guilt over his cruelty at school strengthens his abilities. He resolves to take on even more guilt, and seems to enjoy being an asshole a little too much, all in his quest to surpass his brother. He gets better.
  • Drunk with Power: Ritsu's power awakens fully in this episode and he gets carried away: underestimating Teru, humbling Kamuro, breaking thugs' limbs....
  • My Kung-Fu Is Stronger Than Yours: Ritsu tests his strength against Teru with a handshake, but the older boy overpowers him with ease. He pledges not to lose to anyone other than his big brother.
  • Sanity Slippage: Ritsu's rant before the group of middle school banchō in the alley sounds... more than a little unhinged. It's even more so in the English dub.
Ritsu: ...I'm moving forward for the sake of violence... I'm much freer than all of you. Why? Because I've lost my limits. I've obtained loss.
  • Wham Line: Spoken right after Ritsu's Evil Gloating above:
Mob: Ritsu. What are you doing?
