Recap / Mechamato S1 E9 "Retro Tech"

Go To

A robot hitches a ride in the back of a lorry transporting old technology. Meanwhile, Amato and Deep play Zilator 14, and the latter kills an enemy that knocked out Amato in one hit. Pian shows them a disc of the very first Zilator game that he found in his dad's basement, and invites them to go there to play it. Amato and Deep are in awe of the collection of old technology there. Pian starts up the old computer that can run the game, but Deep gets impatient and hits the monitor until it falls off the set. The robot reveals himself when he cries and hugs the broken monitor.

Now enraged, he summons dozens of electrical devices to upgrade himself, and targets Deep. Mechamato defeats him by mechanizing a CD player to eject disc projectiles. While trying to get answers from the now docile robot, MechaBot decides to call him Bitbobeep because that's all he apparently says. Amato has MechaBot transform a radio and uses it to translate Bitbobeep. He explains that he was defending the monitor, who he calls "Kenny". Bitbobeep's master left him in the space prison to be discarded, so when he landed on Earth and heard of Mr. Aman, who loves collecting old technology, he sought to find him.

Deep explains that Pian is Mr. Aman's son and, since they're friends now, forces the Zilator 1 disc into Bitbobeep's disc player to have him help them play the game. He protests too late and is forced to absorb Amato and MechaBot through his screen. In the game's character selection menu, Deep and Pian find Amato and MechaBot, who explain that Bitbobeep says that they must beat the game to set them free. Pian picks MechaBot and Deep (reluctantly) controls Amato, but he helps carry Pian through the game.

After clearing a stage, the game gets stuck from Bitbobeep overheating, so Pian and Deep place a fan and an open fridge to cool him down. Come the final stage, Deep explains that they must defeat the boss, Bosskar, to win the trophy. Their attacks don't do much damage, so Deep teaches Pian the combo attack which, when done simultaneously, allows both player characters to combine into a powerful warrior. As Mechamato, they greatly reduce Bosskar's health before he fights back with a chest blast, but the fridge breaks down and Bitbobeep starts to heat up again. If he crashes, Amato and MechaBot will be gone forever.

Mechamato tells Deep to get him to use the trophy against Bosskar. Mechanizing it into a cannon while Deep and Pian engage another dual combo attack, Mechamato beats Bosskar, and Amato and MechaBot are set free from the game. As Bitbobeep cheerfully sweeps up the damage from earlier (with the help of the Cone Konchos who are temporarily freed from the Mechanizer), Amato resolves that he doesn't have to capture him. Deep finds more old games in Pian's basement, and recognises one horror game with much enthusiasm. Bitbobeep happily lays out his disc player for Deep, and Amato, Pian and MechaBot yell for him to stop.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Companion Cube: Bitbobeep treats the other pieces of old technology in Mr. Aman's basement as his friends, and acts in retribution against Deep when he "hurts" a monitor who he calls Kenny. Others include Jimmy the jukebox, Suzy the mini-fridge, and Siti Ramlah/Cindy Romanov the CD-ROM.
  • Here We Go Again!: It was because Deep impulsively inserted a video game disc into Bitbobeep that Amato and MechaBot got sucked into the game. They return safely, but by the episode's end, Bitbobeep offers Deep to play another game, which he happily obliges to while his friends run over to stop him.
  • Win to Exit: When Deep inserts a Zilator 1 game into Bitbobeep's disc player, the robot sucks Amato and MechaBot into the game. Under the control of the game's programming, Bitbobeep can only release them by having them beat the game, with Deep and Pian controlling them as players.
