Recap / M*A*S*H S5 E23: Post Op

Go To

The 4077th is running short of blood after a hepatitis outbreak prompted them to throw out their entire supply. Meanwhile, patients in post-op share their burdens with the medical staff.

Attention, all personnel! All blood donors will receive the following tropes:

  • An Arm and a Leg: B.J. has to amputate a mine sweeper's leg after he forgets to deactivate the booby trap on one of them. Then he gets to break the news in post-op.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The Turkish unit that arrives at the end of the episode to donate blood in gratitude for the camp saving the life of their captain.
  • Call-Back: The 4077th's blood supply is discarded after the hepatitis outbreak in "Hepatitis"
  • Casanova Wannabe: One of the patients tries to romance Margaret, failing miserably. He then moves on to another nurse...not realizing it's actually Klinger.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: The rear echelon troops in Rosie's who ask Corporal Moody if he can tap dance.
  • Dirty Coward: Frank panics when Hawkeye and B.J. drag him to the blood clinic in the mess tent. He puts on a brave face when Margaret emerges from the tent, going right back to being afraid when she's out of sight.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Potter is actually getting somewhere with the colonel, until Hawkeye's self righteous threatening makes the guy hang up.
  • Noodle Incident: Hawkeye refers to a previous visit by Corporal Moody, who at the time allegedly wanted to stuff Hawkeye in his duffle bag.
  • Once More, with Clarity: B.J. uses the trope words after he misunderstands when one of the patients being sent home tells him he needs to stay on the frontline in Korea because he's got a family to support, a family that lives back in the United States, not Korea.
  • War for Fun and Profit:
    • One of the patients is dismayed to be sent back to Jersey City because he has been making a killing selling alcohol and Polaroid photos to his buddies at the front at a significant premium.
    • Another patient talks about reading a communist propaganda leaflet that claimed the UN forces were all fighting for Wall Street.
