• The Ageless: The Applebyes made a deal with Zook that allows them to remain young for over 40 years when they give him sacrifices. Once Zook is defeated, the Applebyes age to their real ages.
• Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The Applebyes act all nice and welcoming to the heroes, but as soon as the time to feed Zook comes, they reveal their true faces.
• Deliberate Values Dissonance: The Applebyes' view on dating is very in tune with the 1960s.
• "Everybody Laughs" Ending: Martin, Diana, Java and Billy have a good laugh at finding out that Hunter Barrington is actually a former clown.
• Human Sacrifice: The Applebyes offer people to Zook in exchange for life force so all of them remain alive.
• Our Dragons Are Different: Zook is an ancient Babylonian dragon that feeds on the life force of humans, but if he's unable to, he'll die.
