Recap / Martin Mystery S 1 E 20 The Return Of The Beasts

Go To

Diana and Martin remember how they first met Java. Martin got two days of detention for releasing frogs from a container, and Diana ends up in detention as well even though she did nothing wrong. She also has to help him catch the frogs which are still in the classroom. An evil paleontologist, Dr. Dolphus, recreates mutant dinosaurs to take over the Earth, and he creates Java.

General Tropes:

  • Bond Villain Stupidity: As expected from a classical mad scientist, Dolphus leaves the trio alone to be eaten by his dinosaurs, which gives Java the time to free himself and fight back while Martin and Diana find a way to destroy the dinosaurs.
  • Book Ends: At the start of the episode Martin dives into a drawer that has The Center's portal as if he has diving into a pool. He does the same at the end while escaping Dr. Dolphus' dimension.
  • Call-Forward: Just like how Martin will defeat the alien insect queen in a subsequent adventure, he destroys the mutated dinosaurs by destroying their power source with their own acid spew.
  • Covered in Gunge: This is how Java first appeared. Diana even complains that this always happens to them when she and Martin have to dive into a slime portal to rescue Java.
  • Fossil Revival: Dr. Dolphus uses the power of a geode to reanimate fossils and turn them into mutant dinosaurs.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: When introduced Java had a long Beard of Barbarism and only wore a loincloth, so Martin and Diana take Java to get a haircut and new clothes so they can talk to a witness without her panicking.
  • Hollywood Acid: The spew of one of the dinosaurs is an acid capable of melting steel and stone, which is how Martin destroys the geode that keeps the dinosaurs alive.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Martin uses the acid spew of a dinosaur to destroy the geode that's keeping it alive.
  • Mad Scientist: Dr. Dolphus is a pretty textbook case, being a mad paleontologist who recreates dinosaurs to take over Earth.
  • Mercy Kill: When an outraged Dolphus asks what they have done to his creations as they're melting, Martin says they put them out of their misery as living weapons.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: One of the dinosaurs has the plates of a stegosaurus and the body of a carnosaur. It also spews acid.
  • No Ontological Inertia: When the geode that powers the dinosaurs is destroyed, they all shrink, die and melt into nothing. It doesn't affect Java for some reason.
  • Origins Episode: For Java and how he met Diana and Martin.
  • Prehistoric Monster: The reanimated mutant dinosaurs.
  • Super Spit: One of the dinosaurs spews a highly caustic acid spit.
  • Too Dumb to Live: For some reason Dolphus decided to make one of the dinosaurs capable of spewing an acid that's strong enough to dissolve his geode.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Most of the episode is seen as a flashback when Martin and Diana recall their first case with Java.
