Recap / Mahabharata S 01 E 43

Go To

In this episode of Mahabharata, Yudhistir has his Awesome Moment of Crowning as The Emperor. After a yagna fire ritual, all kings and princes enter the royal court and take their seats. Yudhistir is seated on the throne and asks Bhishma to open the ceremony. Bhishma suggests that Yudhistir venerate all present, but insists that Krishna be venerated first, since he is a god.

Until Shishupal rudely interrupts them all to insult Krishna. And he keeps piling on the insults. This angers Bhim, then Arjun, then Bhishma, then Balaram too. Krishna warns Shishupal to watch it, since he is now on Crime #98 and that three more sins will lead to his doom. Undaunted, Shishupal continues to pile on the insults - until Krishna has had enough and launches his Sudarshan Chakra at Shishupal. Which chases him out of the court before slicing his head clean off.

The discus returns to Krishna, but it cuts him on the finger. Since royalty isn’t allowed to spill blood onto the floor of a royal court, Draupadi immediately rips off a small piece of her sari to bandage Krishna’s bleeding finger. Krishna tells Draupadi that he is indebted to her, and will one day repay her with cloth.

Yudhistir is coronated, gives a speech in which he promises to remain peaceful to all kings present and retires inside with his close family and elders. Both Sage Vyasa and Vidhur give cryptic speeches which are intended more for Duryodhan than Yudhistir, before departing.

All is well that ends well. Or so it seems. Because misery and humiliation is just around the corner.
