Magnum and Higgins are hired by Dr. Owana, Higgins' therapist, to find out why her teenage patient, Ani Rogers, committed suicide.
Katsumoto's son is left fighting for his life after he and his mother are carjacked.
Tropes:
- Bittersweet Ending: Lampshaded by Dr. Owana. The case is solved and those responsible for Ani's suicide will pay, but Ani is still dead.
- Cowboy Cop: Katsumoto lets his rage get the better of him and gets a little too rough with someone who knows who carjacked his ex-wife and son. He snaps at Lia when she reminds him that this kind of behaviour could endanger the case, but later acknowledges that she's right. He hangs back when they're about to bust the perpetrators, to avoid temptation.
- Everyone Can See It: Played With. Katsumoto indicates that he's aware of Magnum and Lia's Secret Relationship, pointing out when they look shocked that he's a detective. It's not made clear if anyone else besides Higgins has worked it out.
- In Love with the Mark: Ani's boyfriend Will only started seeing her after accepting a bet that he could get her to sleep with him by the time of the school dance. He developed real feelings for her while dating, but when Amanda sent Ani the video of him accepting the bet, she became depressed and vulnerable to suggestions that she kill herself.
- Love Epiphany: Higgins has started therapy as she's starting to realise that she's more attracted to Magnum than her boyfriend Ethan.
- Murder by Suicide: Ani's "friend" Amanda incited her to commit suicide. She's charged for Ani's death, and her mother for covering it up.
- Revealing Cover Up:
- Magnum and Higgins are suspicious that Ani's social media pages have been taken down so quickly, especially when her parents mention that they have no idea how to do that. Even more suspicious is the pages' sudden reappearance, probably in response to their asking people about it. Amanda's mother paid a hacker to remove evidence that Amanda incited Ani to commit suicide.
- Ani's boyfriend Will is visbly unsettled and tells Magnum and Higgins to go away when they start asking questions. Sure enough, he knows more about Ani's death than he's telling.
- Spotting the Thread: Higgins realises one of Ani's friends was faking her grief during her memorial.
- Toxic Friend Influence: Amanda, Ani's alleged friend, started a hate campaign against her, even daring a boy to date her for a bet that he could get her to sleep with him by the school dance. Then she sent Ani the video of him accepting the bet, with a message that everyone was laughing at her and that she should just kill herself. She even sent her the pills to do it with.
