Recap / Mad Men S 3 E 1 Out Of Town

Go To

It's April 1963, and Sterling Cooper is now owned by the London firm Putnam Powell and Lowe, who have made Lane Pryce the head accountant (not to be confused with the head of accounts, more on that below). Pryce is charged with laying off 1/3 of the firm's workforce, which means the head of accounts, who promptly goes on a rampage through the office.

Lane puts Pete Campbell and Ken Cosgrove in charge of accounts, hoping that one of them will stand out; while Don and Sal are sent to Baltimore to start a new campaign for London Fog. From this we learn that (1) London Fog is an American company, (2) and the fog in London isn't fog at all, but an early variant of smog. While in Baltimore, Don attempts to have sex with a stewardess and a bellhop who comes up to fix Sal's air conditioner unexpectedly comes on to him, much to his surprise and pleasure. Both liaisons are interrupted when the fire alarm goes off, and Don catches Sal in the act whilst making his way down the fire escape.

On the flight back to New York, Don leans in to give Sal his new slogan for London Fog: Limit Your Exposure.

This series contains examples of:

  • Double Entendre: "London Fog: Limit Your Exposure"
  • Coitus Interruptus: Doubly so.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Joan and Peggy (and probably Hildy) are the only women to not find Mr. Hooker attractive.
  • Flashback: To Dick Whitman's birth and its circumstances.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Mr. Hooker is to take Joan's place after Greg gets his residency and he fails to respect Joan or take any of her advice, despite knowing how to deal with American Men and how to gracefully inform them they are to be fired.
  • One-Steve Limit: Exceeded, sort of, with Bert Cooper and Burt Peterson.
  • Southern Belle: Shelly, the Flight Attendant. She is young, beautiful, witty, charming, flirtatious, feminine, stylish, and has the accent to boot. She appears to be of the Bonne Belle variant with a twist...she is engaged and game to flirt and sleep with handsome passengers like Don Draper.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: This episode introduces us to Burt Peterson, who replaced Duck Phillips as the company's head of accounts in-between this and the previous season... and then has him fired in his very first scene.
