Recap / Lucifer (2016) S06E09 "Goodbye, Lucifer"

Go To

Upon hearing Lucifer's decision not to become God, Amenadiel warns him that their angelic siblings have been causing havoc trying to fulfill the wishes of humans without guidance. Eventually, he decides that he will become God, but vows not to repeat his father's mistakes by becoming a distant entity to angels and humans alike. Lucifer, on the other hand, is living the last day before he disappears, according to Rory, and bids goodbye to everyone.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • The Bus Came Back:
  • Disappears into Light: Dan finally makes peace with his guilt and ascends to Heaven in a bright light.
  • Hope Spot: Lucifer and Chloe spend what could be his final 45 minutes on Earth in his safe room holding each other. When the door unlocks at midnight Lucifer has seemingly beaten the clock and prevented his disappearance. Then Le Mec calls Lucifer on Rory's phone and tells him to meet him at 10th and Swanson...
  • I Have Your Wife: The episode ends with Vincent calling Lucifer that he has Rory, and wants him to meet him at the place where he will disappear.
  • My Greatest Failure: Dan's greatest source of guilt is revealed to be his own belief that he was a terrible father to Trixie and that he couldn't be the role model she deserved. After Trixie tells Dan, who is in Le Mec's body, that she loved her father and was always proud of him, Dan is finally able to let go of his guilt and move on.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Jophiel attempts to grant a prisoner's wish to see his cat by letting a lion loose in the prison. When the guards rush off to deal with it, Le Mec is able to break out of his cell.
    • Not that they had any way of knowing, but Trixie giving Dan his final epiphany also releases Le Mec from Dan's possession.
  • Pre-Sacrifice Final Goodbye: Lucifer doesn't know exactly what causes him to disappear, but he still gives preemptive goodbyes to his close friends.
  • Sincerity Mode: When Lucifer is saying goodbye to each of his loved ones he makes sure to truly tell them how much they all mean to him and how glad he is to have them in his life.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The Angels are revealed to have become this in God's absence. They all want to help humans and answer prayers to the best of their ability, however without God's guidance their ill-thought-out blessings are slowly damaging the Earth. Amenadiel even says that without guidance soon they will cause the Apocalypse via Death by a Thousand Cuts.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Despite the deadline having passed, Lucifer still ends up having to go to the intersection between 10th and Swanson, the place where Rory said that he will disappear, once Le Mec holds her hostage.
