Recap / Lost Tapes S 2 E 3 Southern Sasquatch

Go To

Jr. CEO Matthew Barton is on a hunting trip with his fiancé's brothers to bond with his in-laws in the woods of Fouke, Arkansas. The real hunt, however, involves them being the query of the famed Southern Sasquatch himself...the Fouke Monster.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Levi doesn't believe in the creature despite seeing it twice and shooting it as many times. To be fair, he mentions offhandedly that Corbin got a better view of the thing and is probably trying to stop his brother from panicking. Tellingly fitting that Levi is the first one to get killed in the second act.
  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: The second furry hominid to feature after the Bigfoot from Season 1. The Fouke Monster is far more aggressive and territorial, as Matthew and the Knox brothers fatally discover.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: There is quite a bit more blood and vicious injuries depicted here, especially when the sasquatch cuts up Levi's chest upon killing him.
  • Conveniently Timed Attack from Behind: Inverted with the monster grabbing Levi while he and Corbin found Matthew's bloody hunter vest near a bush. Earlier, it seemed to attempt the tactic on Matthew before the Knoxs spotted it and shot at it...though it only managed to slowly delay the inevitable.
  • Downer Ending: The hunters are all killed by the Fouke Monster for invading its land or for shooting at him (perhaps both). Worse still, Abby Knox lost both her brothers and her husband-to-be with their deaths being officially labeled as bear attacks.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: The Fouke Monster is far more vicious and territorial than his Pennsylvanian counterpart in Season 1, who only killed a poacher to protect Rachel, to who the latter hominid had grown attached. This beast went straight for the nuclear option upon seeing three men in his territory, though to be fair, that was only after Levi shot at him twice. Justified as the locals of Fouke will tell you that the majority of the monster's interactions with humans have been violent to the point that Loren Coleman calls it the most dangerous kind of bigfoot.
  • Heroic BSoD: Corbin snaps after seeing his brother get mauled to death and it comes full circle after he returns with Matthew and sees poor Levi's corpse hung up a tree. The former Knox eventually gets left behind by Matthew and spends his last moments begging his in-law to come back while he's viciously killed.
  • It Can Think: Matthew sees to his horror that the monster tore down most of the ladder to the treestand, leaving him helpless to the creature. The Fouke Monster wasn't taking any chances after seeing Levi shooting at everything and thus killed him first, picking off the broken Corbin and inexperienced Matthew not long afterward.
  • Made of Iron: Assuming that any of Levi's shots actually hit the apeman, it only served to enrage the Fouke Monster so that it would see them as a threat.
  • Manly Men Can Hunt: The Knox brothers have this attitude towards Matthew early on, though Corbin is a little less gung-ho about it compared to Levi. Funnily enough, the latter shooting so much caused the Fouke Monster to target him first, leaving the emotionally drained Corbin and novice shooter Matthew with little chance.
  • Mood Whiplash: The snipe hunt which involves Matthew unknowingly being pranked clucking soon gives way to shock and dread when the Knoxs spot a giant shadowy figure creeping behind him and open fire. When they rush down, neither Matthew nor the creature is anywhere to be found and all the chirping birds and insects have gone dead quiet.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Levi's Trigger-Happy nature bit his, his brother, and future brother-in-law's asses assuming that the Fouke Monster was merely defending his territory and made him see the hunters as a danger to him. As a result, all three men lose their lives and leave behind an undoubtedly heartbroken widow and sister.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Knox brothers Levi and Corbin play it straight with even their shirts reflecting the respective colors. Levi is the first to shoot things and is the more easygoing and mischievous Red whilst Corbin is the soft-spoken and observant Blue. It becomes inverted when Matthew disappears with Levi keeping his head more or less and Corbin panicking that their sister will kill them for losing her fiancé in the marshlands.
    • Later Corbin becomes Red to Matthew's Blue for a short time after Levi's death, with the freshly new-to-hunting Matthew keeping his nerve for significantly longer than his so-called expert brother-in-law.
  • Right Behind Me: Matthew is busy getting into snipe hunting before the sasquatch approaches him from behind without him noticing. The Knox brothers do see the creature and open fire, only to find both it and Matthew gone. Later on, when the brothers are looking around for Matt, the monster suddenly comes up behind Levi and mauls him to death, sending the horror-stricken Corbin running. Corbin soon reunites with Matthew with the latter mentioning he did notice the beast right after the shots were fired and he fled into the brush to hide.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Levi, the more accomplished and level-headed Knox, is killed by the Fouke Monster to establish the creature's power and makes things extra bleak for the other two.
  • Snipe Hunt: The Knox brothers send Matthew on one when no deer can be found. They make him think Levi got scarred by one and leave the clueless man clucking like a chicken to draw one out, much to their amusement. The laughs cease after the monster is witnessed stalking their future brother-in-law while doing so.
  • Trigger-Happy: Levi tends to shoot first without expecting any complaining from Corbin. Deconstructed as this tendency probably played a part in why the sasquatch went from mildly curious to "must brutally kill everybody" and why he was the first to be slaughtered.
