Call-Back: This is the first episode to recall the death of Baby Freddie in Season 1's "The Lord is My Shepherd". Caroline is distressed with the chance that she can give Charles a son who can carry his surname and be an heir, and fill the void left by Freddie, and it's also the first time his grave is shown on-screen.
Fortune Teller: Madame Maria, a fortuneteller Laura meets who camps at Walnut Grove and gets visited by the girl and later Caroline, and tells Ma that her baby is a son... it isn't.
Foregone Conclusion: The baby turns out to be a girl, whom they name Grace, which anyone familiar with the History of the Ingalls family would know.
Series Continuity Error: When Baby Freddie's grave appears, the dates of his birth and death match those of real life, showing that he died in August, 1876. Thing is, then he'd be alive as of Centennial of American Independence, and yet there's an episode in Season 2 set during it, "Centennial", and it was clearly long after his death.
