Lizzie decides to say yes to every possibility this semester. Kaleb overhears this and tells MG that this is his best shot to get with her. MG invites Lizzie on a study date at the old mill, a popular romantic location. While there and waiting for MG, who's been detained, she meets a charming stranger named Sebastian, who warns her to stay away from him. She tries to use a locator spell to find him, but he finds her and asks her to stop trying to look for him. Unaware of MG's feelings for her, she tells him about Sebastian. Even though it breaks his heart, he decides to support her as a friend.

Meanwhile, Hope tracks the troll to the Mystic Falls High School and is surprised to learn that Alaric is the school's new principal. She enrolls as a new student in order to find the troll, which only comes out at night. Alaric finds her suspicious, and she tells him about the troll. He goes hunting for it, and they seemingly kill it with a crossbow bolt. Based on his own unexplained reactions to Hope, Alaric deduces that he must have known her at some point but was made to forget her by Malivore. The troll turns out to be alive, and they track it to the center of the town, where it nearly attacks Landon, who is listening to loud music on his headphones and misses the whole fight. Hope and Alaric discover that the creature is actually a cyclops (its long hair was hiding the eye), and Hope kills it with a crossbow bolt to the eye. Landon sees Hope and talks to her, revealing that he's seeing someone. She gives him some advice, and he leaves. Hope comes to Alaric for some comfort, explaining that he was like a father to her.

A new headmaster, a male witch, arrives to the Salvatore School and starts to change things. He professes supernatural supremacist views and enforces strict rules. He catches Josie causing a magical nosebleed on a girl who is flirting with Landon and then privately tells her that he's forming a special study group for particularly gifted witches, asking her to join. Landon is popular now, since everyone believes that he destroyed Malivore. Landon asks Josie out on a date, and they go to a sushi restaurant. The date goes horrible, and Josie goes to her room. After talking to Hope, Landon comes back and goes to talk to Josie. She reveals she's allergic to seaweed and only agreed to go for sushi because Landon wanted to. She explains that she doesn't know what to do around Landon, since he doesn't need a caretaker, a role she's been playing all her life, but they kiss and make up, and he reveals that he doesn't know how Malivore was destroyed.

The hooded figure kills a jogger at night and carves the Triad symbol on his forehead.

  • Bait-and-Switch: Professor Vardemus tells Josie he caught her using a spell to give another student a nosebleed. However, instead of berating or punishing her, he advises her to add a special prefix to delay spells, so she isn't caught again. He also invites her to participate in a special curriculum for advanced magic-users.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Josie acts a little like that to a witch who keeps flirting with Landon, using a spell to give her a nosebleed.
  • Cyclops: The creature turns out to be this rather than a troll.
  • Go for the Eye: This is the cyclops' weak spot, as Hope kills it with a crossbow bolt to the eye.
  • Let's Just Be Friends: MG tries to get with Lizzie, but the appearance of Sebastian puts an end to that. MG's argument to Kaleb is that he knows everything about her and loves every part of it. However, after hearing that she likes Sebastian precisely because he doesn't know her, he decides to support her as a friend, even though it breaks him up inside.
  • Spotting the Thread: Alaric realizes he must know Hope, since he knew to toss the crossbow bolt to Hope in the middle of a fight, claiming it was like a reflex. She tries to deny it, but he deduces that Malivore must have erased her.
  • Super Supremacist: Professor Vardemus, the new headmaster, believes that supernaturals are inherently superior to humans. On the other hand, he expects the students to work all the harder to live up to that ideal.
